dunno, but I have a ton of that shite in my yard too. trouble is, it crowds out the good grass in the spring and then dies as soon as the weather gets hot leaving bare ground.

Yea the root system is thick and deeper than the St Aug

It has a central root that if you can find you can pull up a whole patch at once

I sprayed weed free zone and simizine about a month ago, it killed a lot of the problem weeds that had taken over. About 2 weeks ago I planted some premium perennial rye grass in the backyard where the weeds were bad. In some of the spots where it was thickest the rye didn't make really germinate. So Thursday, I got a thatch rake with the intention of doing the areas it didn't take very well but ended up doing most of the backyard (not a recommendation) then reseeded the back yard in the thinner spots.

Just a heads up: The rye grass isn't cheap, you can probably get the cheaper kind but my neighbor said this one doesn't grow as tall, and if you decide to thatch those areas with lots of weeds you're going to need quite a few trash bags, I filled up 6.

If you over-seed your lawn grass with rye, make sure to keep it mowed, especially in March/April while your primary grass is waking. Otherwise, those long leaves of the rye will be filling themselves with the good stuff that your primary needs.

Yeah I have a small reel mower I'm going to use, to keep it knocked back. My dog and kid were going to turn my yard into a mud pit if I didn't have something actively growing. I'm going to dethatch, aerate, fill with sand/topsoil and overseed in the spring.

Was thinking about overseeing with zoysia but I don't think it will take off like that. I'm not going to remove all existing grass for weeks/months to start from scratch, and I'm not spending money on sod. Probably just use centipede and/or Bermuda.

There was a thread on here a couple weeks ago about this exact weed. It seems we all have it right now. I think someone said to use a product called Celsius WG. Amazon has it but it's 113$

It thrives in hard, compacted lawns. 2,4-D will kill it. Then aerate your yard and give it a good dose of fertilizer in the spring.

Should I aerate now or wait till spring?

I did some research on this myself and talked to someone about, in hardiness zones 8b-9a (BR area) they say you can aerate at any time because it doesn't get cold enough for long enough to really hurt it, and the roots will still grow in the winter. I did mine about 2-3 weeks ago, but I will do it again in the spring because mine was really bad. 10-12 year old sod laid on built up land that gets heavy traffic, and hasn't been done as long as my neighbor has been there (10years).

I'd for sure do it in the spring but doing it now and then might be beneficial.

Google Virginia Buttonweed/ Dan Gill. That should bring up an article explaining how to treat this stuff.

Short version: 2-4-D early spring, or treat individual small patches with Roundup.

The herbicide metsulfuron (Manor, MSM Turf, Top Shot and other brands) will do a good job and can be used following label directions despite the heat. If your problems are in spots or clusters, you my just spot treat those areas to minimize herbicide use and save some work. You may continue to spot treat, as needed,
