Ulnar Nerve Entrapment surgery---any of you know anything about this?

So my left pinkie and half of my ring finger have been numb since mid July. Can't move my pinkie by itself at all. Tried therapy, but no change. So, I saw a neurologist and he tested the nerve and said I would definitely need surgery and as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage.
I've read about the surgery a little bit, and it doesn't seem like a complicated procedure, but I have read some nightmare stories of recovery. I was hoping some of you knew someone who had it and if there were any surgeon in Baton Rouge you would recommend? Or any to avoid? TIA

Why get surgery a pinkie finger isn't that important.
Plus not feeling any pain would be a cool party trick.

Yeah, it untraps the ulnar nerve.
- Dr. Rick Ahmad. Pretty straightforward procedure like CTS release.

I need to get it done on both elbows plus I have carpal tunnel in both arms. I'm interested in any information from someone who's been through it. I need to know the recovery time.
It's more than loss of feeling in my right hand. If I hold my fingers straight out I cannot make the pinky touch the finger next to it. It sticks out at an angle. The next finger over can't touch my middle finger either but the gap is much less.

Mine were like that on my left hand but only lasted about 2-3 weeks. Except now, if I sleep with my arm bent at the elbow, they go numb within 5 minutes, or if I bend it while asleep, I'll wake up in excruciating pain. My doc's response... "well, don't sleep like that. Sleep with your arm straight out". My wife won't have any of that.

Does your arm get really hot or swell randomly?

I actually had it done several years ago.
Woke up one morning and had a "pins and needles" feeling one one side of my left hand. Thought I slept on it wrong and went about life.
About a month late, I noticed my pinkie and ring finger curling in while my had was at rest. I also had no grip strength with my thumb (found that out trying to hold a plate to wash it and kept dropping it).
Went to my general doctor and he referred me to a neurologist. They did a bunch of tests (including one painful test where they stuck needles in my arm and shocked me) and determined it was a pinch in my ulnar nerve. They sent me to another specialist who took one look at my hand, said the nerve was dying (due to my fingers bending in), and recommended surgery immediately.
I had surgery like two days later. It went well. Simple out patient and I took off work for about a week to recover. Recovery in my hand was almost immediate and I've had no trouble with it ever since.
You waited a lot longer than I did, so hope all goes well. I wish I could remember who did my surgery, but this was about 8 years ago.

Yeah, this exactly. I don't care about the pain, but it's hard to do stuff like tie my shoes, button my pants, cut my fingernails on the opposite hand, etc.. And it muscles in your hand can atrophy and/or get stuck in a claw position.

had the surgery 6 years ago. worst part of the entire thing was them pulling the stitches out that held the nerve to the muscle to heal for the first 14 days. that pain was terrible but only lasted about a couple minutes or so

I am seeing Dr. Bowling who is in the same office. It does look pretty straightforward, I'm curious about the recovery time.

If the whole hand goes numb, you could have "The Stranger" any time.
Think about it.

Damn how much did you beat off?

My Mother in Law had it done. No big deal, she's back to 100%

Yeah. The loss of feeling while annoying is bearable. It's the loss of motor skills and strength plus the deformity that bothers me.

i had issues with my ulner nerve about 18 months ago. Left pinkie were numb, and half my left ring finger as well. 1st doctor thought it was from hitting the elbow and an mpact on the Ulner nerve there.
They did electric pulse testing, MRI, ect. come to find out, i had a pinched nerve between 6th and 7th vert. in my neck that was causing the nerve issues.... physical therapy and nerve issue went away...
just make sure they are looking at the right cause of the problem

Dr. Ahmad is a great doc. he just performed my Distal tendon repair at the 1st of the year. Navy doc. Not the best bed side manor, but he know his stiff. he specializes in hands and elbows..

I had to get this same surgery a few years ago. I went to Our Lady Of Lourdes. Can't remember the doc or surgeon. The surgery wasn't too bad but the nerve block and anesthesia took longer to wear off than the doctor had said so you can imagine how freaked out I was a couple days later when I still had zero feeling in my left arm. I called the nurse and she was concerned, but after some reassurance from the doctor to give it another day, my feeling slowly came back. You will have to wear a cast for a few weeks and they had to remove the staples from my arm as well. Not a great experience but better than losing feeling in half of your hand. Good luck.
