My teenage son wants a car and has come down to these too. Anybody have any experience or know anything about with these two cars?

they're both chick cars

Maintenance and reliability issues make them both terrible cars to own.

I'd never buy a BMW 3 series. You're paying german made BMW prices for American quality.

I've owned both and the only thing that is worse than a BMW is an Audi.
Can you talk him into an Acura or Honda or Lexus or Toyota?

You'd be dumb to buy either.

can't comment on the bmw but be careful with the audi if it has the 2.0T engine, they had major oil consumption issues from 2008-2012, google audi a4 2.0T oil consumption for more info, audi has since fixed the engine problem,
my son got a black on black 2015 A4 2.0T Quatro S-line, he loves it, and as dabigfella stated it is a chick car according to my son, err chick magnet...

Why would you give a teenager a BMW or Audi in the first place?

If he wants a sports car and somehow persuaded you to get him one, get an IS 250.

Your money and your kid, though. BMWs are better cars than Audis in general. And the 3-series is the company's bread and butter. It's far better than the A4.

I have a 12 audi q5 with 70,000. Im wondering when all these maintenance problems will pop up, because I have had none.
I also have not had the oil consumption issue somebody talked about.
I have done nothing but the regular maintenence schedule. Dont get me wrong it would be expensive if stuff broke, but i havent had anything break.
Now all that being said, i wouldnt give a teenager a german sports sedan. Teenagers never take care of cars and you dont want him tearing it up. That would be expensive.
But him something he can tear up, not keep clean, or can dent up, for a first car.

3 series
Teenagers aren't ready for Audi.

The first car I bought when I was 16 was a '92 325i. It had about 150k on it when I got it, so I learned how to fix it as it broke down all the fricking time. When it worked it was great. I'm lucky to be alive as I liked to go fast and that car allowed me to go fast. I wouldn't give a BMW or Audi or any other fast car to a teen as I know what they'll do with it.

My understanding is the 3 series will run forever, but maintenance costs will add up. Plus insurance will be high as shite for a teenager driving one. But I think I'd go with the BMW over the Audi in terms of reliability.
Either are good options in general, but as has been mentioned, they will cost a lot of money and your son will likely tear up whatever he gets, Honda Civic or Mercedes G Wagon. Doesn't matter. They'll all end up in the shop at some point.
