So you listened to 1 song that you think sort of sounds like a Dinosaur Jr song (I disagree) and based your opinion on that?
Look, I'm a big Dinosaur Jr fan and I just don't see the connection. If you don't like a band's sound, then yeah, don't listen to them. I'd try listening to the rest of Teens of Denial and form an opinion off of that.
I listened to every song on the album that is just their top one and a good example. I never even said I didn't like it ( I do). It just isn't "Album of the Year" material to me. There just isn't anything there that makes it stand out compared to bands/music that already make similar sounding music that was all I was pointing out.
For some reason people love to overrate bands because no one has heard of them. To me "Album of The Year" is something that was in some way unique, ground breaking, creative, and would eventually stand the test of time. None of that applies to Car Seat Headrest and some of hte others and that was the point I was trying to make albeit in a simple comparison.

I need to listen to this whole album. The Nazareth song is pretty badass.

To me “Album of the Year” means the album I have enjoyed the most this year. I don’t really care how cutting edge it is or how many people are familiar with the band. And Car Seat Headrest is one of the most mentioned bands in this thread, so it’s not like they are some super obscure group that people are trying to impress others by knowing. I really don’t care if someone doesn’t like Car Seat Headrest. There is nothing wrong with that, music is personal and subjective, but I really hate arguments like this:

dude really? INCREDIBLE?
adjective

so extraordinary as to seem impossible:
I didn't say it wasn't good just not AOY material and certainly not "incredible".

Meh ok. I guess we have different definitions of AOY then. I enjoyed the shite out of Avalanches new album but I don't think its AOY.
Anyway I got this thread off track I'll quit being an a-hole

I respectfully disagree, gamatt. My personal opinion is that the Car Seat Headrest album is incredible. Now, please try to understand that this is a completely subjective opinion that is entirely my own. And to echo Seaward's argument, it would appear as though my sentiment in this regard is shared by many many other people, and media websites/zines, etc.

You can try to make some kind of "advancing the artform" component for AOTY, but that's incredibly limiting. On top of that, it's going to have you constantly in pursuit of novelty instead of quality.
AOTY for me is the album that I listened to the most as a whole or appreciated the most as a complete artistic expression or, sometimes yes, an album that did something so interesting and novel that I acknowledge it regardless of how much I enjoyed it or listened to it (Swans the Seer was in that vein for me a few years back).

I like almost nothing anyone else here likes, so be warned that the below is a shitty list:
You Won't - Revolutionaries
Lucius - Good Grief
Mandolin Orange - Blindfaller

Well,
That's your opinion, man...
I enjoyed their latest album a bunch. I don't think AOTY has to be groundbreaking, unique, etc. It just needs to be very good and something that you can come back to and listen to over and over again. Those may be one and the same for you, but not for everyone.
