It will probably tank after a couple of years.

It's coming. We have had massive flooding in that area like 3 times over the last 1.5 years, so...

Yet they can get an aquarium. Joy.

the bitterness towards this aquarium is amazing to me from locals

always complain about nothing to do, we get something new being put into a building that was just sitting there, rotting away becoming an eyesore, and now we complain about that something new is coming

wtf? what is wrong with you people?

Shreveport is the only Louisiana city outside of New Orleans with true old money.

Is that a good thing? There is absolutely no philanthropy here compared to other cities whose residents have been fortunate. Probably because of demographics (wink, wink).

Go to Tulsa, OK. A city that began similarly to Shreveport, with big oil & gas discoveries around the turn of the century. Then look at what they've done with it. You have awesome public golf courses (La Fortune Park), the Philbrook Museum, Warren Clinic, etc. All because these ballers decided to make their town better. What have Shreveport's "old money" ever done besides the Norton and sporadic donations to LSUHSC? Now, some of our "new money" folks are doing things, ie: Robinson, but the old money folks are just kicking it down to their kids who have moved on to Dallas, LA, or anywhere else.

I mean, look at this damn thing:

Probably because descendants of the Tulsa old families still reside there versus Shreveport where many have moved to Dallas or Houston throughout the years. I will agree with you that Tulsa is actually a pretty nice place.

Maybe there's a giant hole because there isn't any demand...

Unless this thing is going to be like Sea World, it will be a "one n done" type of thing for locals and there aren't enough tourists visiting Shreve-a-dise to sustain it.

They will be living off steeply discounted school field trips in less than 2 years.

I don't think you realize how many people come to Shreveport for the casinos.

And plenty of people (locals) go to Sci Port all the time, multiple times a year, which is right across the road. I know we do. This could be easily paired with a trip to Sci Port and the Aquarium.

Yep. Like this guy: Alfred Glassell, who went to Byrd, moved to Houston, became a huge patron of the arts, caught a world record Marlin, and left his family a $500MM estate (after legal battles it went mostly to charities).

Gary,

You know that isn't true. The same old families have held up all of the charities. Look at the Community Foundation Donor Advised Funds.

You know these people. Look at the back of any program at any event. Its the same people that were doing it back the in 20's.

Hate on Shreveport all you want, but you'll never see a Shreveport debutante whose grandfather was a plant operator. You can't say that about Baton Rouge. Shreveport is the only Louisiana city outside of New Orleans with true old money.

Bingo. Even my friends from New Orleans acknowledge that. After going to Comus, Rex, Proteus, and the Pickwick Club, and bringing my friends from there to Shreveport for events, they admit Shreveport is the closest thing. That doesn't mean its close, just the closest. Shreveport just isn't as old and big as NOLA.

I get it. Texas citizens roll into Shreve for the casinos but do you REALLY think they give a rats arse about a tiny local aquarium?

It just seems like this is a half hearted measure to revitalize one building rather than creating an immersive district that could revitalize the entire city.

I'm nearly always skeptical when Gov spends a little money, but after reading a little bit I think this will be a nice addition. The SciPort is pretty cool, plus we won't have to go to that shithole called NOLA to look at a few fish other than the gou and shoepiks in the BassPro tank.

Compare the demographics of Tulsa and Shreveport and you have your answer as to why.

families with young kids will and the fact that it is right next door to Sci Port will make it even that more appealing

its a start

it isn't all going to happen at once

trust me, I would want nothing more than to see the "Red River District" actually become something

BassPro is in Bossier, not the Ratchet City.

I have small children, if it's still in business in 4 years I'll probably have to go to this redneck fish tank 6 times a year. Did you know there's an alligator park off Greenwood Road? Me either, until my friends with kids told me.

Completely agree there. Plenty of others who don't, though.
