Would this be a better idea that just allowing a team to score on the defense at will?

If the Saints recover the ball 33% of the time that's more possessions for the Saints offense to put points on the scoreboard and more time for the defense to rest. If the odds of the opposing defense scoring on the Saints is greater than recovering an onside kick, then it would make sense.

What does the ST think?

I watched a Pee-Wee team do it on Saturday...The first two kickoffs they recovered...

Why not?

I was calling for an onside kick coming out of half Monday night. First play that Atlanta ran on offense after the touchback took them to where the onside kick would have placed the ball. With our defense, you have to steal possessions. I say onside often and go for it on 4th more often as well.

You're just trying to keep the Saints defense from being considered the statistically worse team in the league since they would give up about 25 yards less per drive.

At this point in the history the Saints franchise, I would have to say that, however comical, that is a good idea.

If they recovered it 1/3 of the time it would be the greatest special teams feat ever.

Why the hell not?

Our season is done anyway. Go for 2 after every touchdown while we are at it. 4th down, go for it

There have been 80 points scored in the dome so far this year in only 2 attempts by above average offenses.

We just gave up over 300 total yards and 4 touchdowns to 2 RBs...RBs generally receive the ball behind the LOS 90-95% of the time.

We have sported defenses ranked in the 30s for seemingly every important defensive stat 3 out of the last 4 years.

Do it.

Gregg Easterbrook talks about this all the time. He's actually run the numbers and proved that if a team never punts, it tends to add something like 3 points per game in the long run. (It might be more but it's been a while since I read him)

The odds of recovering a surprise onside kick are much higher than when it is expected.
