One thing I do is tell the players straight up and then instill it on their parents...
"Practice is your time to show me what you've been working on at home"
Team practices aren't for me teaching you the fundamentals. We teach them the first week and you work on them at home. We don't have enough time out here to teach Johnny to catch a ball. If you want him to catch a ball, then throw to him at home and show us in practice how good he can catch, then well see what we can do.

Sports parents suck.
17 years of coaching, and this is my first year sitting out.

You have to stop it before practice even starts. Have a parent meeting and let them know that the kids that work the hardest, show up for practice on time and do their job will play.
I tell the parents that complain that their kid is not playing is not there yet, but as long as they keep playing they will get it. Kids that play peewee are more times that not better high school players than those who don't.

I try to do the mandatory play time thing.....I really do...but if the kid sucks...even after being coached and taught over and over what to do...why should I hurt the team and the ones who care and try really hard by having Sucky McSuckerson out there for his minimum time not doing shite but looking like he sucks....
If it is a rule, then all teams should abide by it. I'm coaching a flag football team right now. We put in a rotation that goes on Offense & Defense, then goes to the next rotation. Your job as a coach isn't to win games, it's to teach the kids the game. Do you think you are the only team with kids that aren't very good? Teach the kid as much as you can...put him in a rotation and give him a shot to learn just like the other kids.
On the other hand, if you are coaching a competitive league without mandatory playing time rules...you need to make sure the parents understand that before the season starts. Since you said it was a "Mandatory" playing time rule...I'm believing that isn't the case.

I have a parent/player/coach contract that sounds exactly like what you do. Still they bitch.

we have the mando play rule yes...but the league is very competitive still...rule isn't truly enforced unless parent goes to AD...until then I get the earful from the parents...but when AD asks me why I don't play him...and its because he doesn't give his all at practice and never knows what to do even when instructed, I usually get a behind closed doors slap on the wrist...cause AD knows what's really up..
oh and we do play to win...AND teach...not doing so is millennial "every body is a winner" BS...

No one is holding a gun to your head, forcing you to volunteer coach.
I bet you're the neighborhood watch captain too. How much does that pay?

Oh, Dawg Jr. good enough to go pro, you couldn't have a dumb-shite coach ruin his athletic prowess so early in his career?
Gotcha.

Y'all play U10, 8v8?
7v7 actually. BRSC did some reshuffling this year to the rec leagues, it's all grade based now. So if you're in 4th grade, you play together regardless of birthday. I've got another kid playing 6th grade, and that's 9v9

That's cool, it'll line up with high school better. I doubt my boy will play with school until Stanislaus, which has a Jr high team. No idea if those kids play club soccer as well.
I like 9v9.
I think my son might guest play in BR the weekend of Oct. 8. Not sure what the tournament name is though.
ETA: There are enough schools to make a league of 4th graders? Do some of those kids play club soccer too? Our rec leagues would be shut down if schools did that, but it may help participation. I wish our rec leagues had more support, but dad's coaching can be a hit or and miss.

Typically those two characteristics are mutually exclusive.

Why do you care if they bitch?
I've coached a number of youth teams and have loved every minute of it. But what parents say/do doesn't phase me. And if I screw up, and that does happen, I'm ok taking the licks. I deserve them.
If it's competitive sports, be a man and understand that competing means you better be equipped to handle the bad parts. Hell that's what makes you better, the bad parts.

I think there is a big difference between rec ball and travel ball.
In travel ball, the expectation is to win, you don't have to take kids you don't want, play kids you don't want, etc. You play to win the game.
Rec ball is different. Winning should NEVER be the most important part of rec ball. It's all about teaching skills, teaching responsibility, and having fun. Winning is fun and involves skills and responsibility, so it's part of the game. But it should never be the most important goal. Ever. In rec ball.
You try to balance out the kids, give them different chances to be successful. If they don't come to practice or pay attention, talk to the parents. In the leagues where I coach, there is a mandatory play rule, but the league will waive the rule if a coach can show that the kid habitually misses practice.

Yea, but rec is always about winning at the district and state level though...it starts somewhere. Then AllStars...
Glad to be done with that shite show.

Have done rec, all-stars and travel. There is no difference IMO.
You coach to teach at all 3 levels. You play to win at all 3 levels. You play your best players the most and your least capable not as much. But you teach the least capable just like the most and expect them to improve over the course of the year.
My goals were always, in order:
1) Every kid show marked improvement by the end of the year,
2) Win
3) Every kid should want to play again next year based on his experience with me this year
The best moments of most games were when the "least" kid made a play and you saw his face and the face of his teammates.

so you are THAT guy on the board?...story behind it is this...guy who coached tball for my now 13 yr old was horrible...he didn't come to practice, never had the equipment, uniforms were ordered late...no party at the end of the season...no trophies...and he ended up in jail a few weeks later for beating his wife...well the only reason that team was able to BE a team that season is because I stepped up...and been doing it ever since...my boys are OK at sports...one is better than the other honestly...but I prefer they have a good experience and that's why I do it...cause I don't trust other people...if you want some thing done right...gotta do it yourself....
