Potential to be great? He was already there. 2.58 ERA and 11.2 K/9 for his career. He should win the Cy Young this year. Man, this sucks

I honestly believe it may be the most tragic death of an athlete ever.

Junior Seau's death is up there. Although his career was over I think he was pretty beloved in San Diego.

That's rough.
My daughter goes to the same high school from which he graduated.
It's gonna be a tough week for a lot of people there.

That's the biggest shock gut punch I've ever seen because I was following the team and basketball players just didn't die on the court. He had a huge future.
But Nile Kinnick...if we're talking about talent and tragedy.
Died at age 24, US Naval aviator, Heisman trophy winner...told the NFL no...to go fight in WWII. Plane crashed. He was the most famous football player in America, never played a down in the NFL. Never saw any riches from his gift.

im having trouble getting over it not going to lie. I dont usually get affected by these type of things.
Same here. This was the first thing I saw when I looked at my phone this morning and I wanted so much for it to be a hoax. While sad, I've never been one to be affected or sad by an athlete/celebrity death, but this one hit me so hard. Jose was great to watch, not only on the mound, but just the way he was in the dugout even on days when he didn't pitch. This sucks.

Ditto. And I was feeling it before Watching the video of his grandma and reading some of the social media posts from his teammates, those really got to me

Along those same lines, Georgia Tech had a halfback named Clint Castleberry who finished 3rd in the Heisman voting in 1942 and led GT to wins over powers Notre Dame (at Notre Dame and I think their first loss in a couple of years) and Navy. He left school after his freshman season (freshman allowed to play due to WWII) and joined the Army Air Forces. He flew a mission and the body was never found (wreckage was found).

No big worldwide impact, but Wally Pontiff hit me hard. He may not have had MLB star talent, but when you're an athlete in your early 20s, you're not supposed to go to sleep and not wake up.
