Sometimes you don't have a choice

I grew up with a friend of mine who's dad would sell their food stamps for crack. Poor bastard had to hustle just to eat. Never had a chance. He would ask his dad for food and his dad would beat his arse. Looking back on this now I truly wonder how many of those "thugs" (which he was to this day) had to endure this kind of treatment.

A choice for what? Your rambling did not clarify

It is an unbreakable cycle

You're a product of your environment. Some break the cycle and some continue the shite show.

Sorry. A choice not to start off in a life of crime and theft. Kinda hard to learn new ways after that's all you know. But as an adult you can choose and change.
Just frustrated. Just found out he is no longer with us.

The vast majority. Upbringing plays a huge role in the person you grow up to be.

Well sorry to hear you lost someone you do seem to care about. His dad was a pos and hopefully he gets what he deserves if he hasn't already.
All I can say is change starts with you. He had a shite start on life...and he chose to continue in that path. Not saying it's an easy thing to change and overcome, but you either follow suit or you break the fricking chain that binds you.

I met a kid two years ago, he was in the 5th grade. Came from a horrible home. Mom made him take care of himself. He would come to our gym to play ball and had a ton of talent. If he worked he could have been really good. A buddy put him on his traveling team and set rules for him. He couldn't do it. Had no drive to go to school or make something of himself. Ended up getting kicked off the team. Saw him in Instagram today flying his colors and throwing signs. It always depresses me when you work with kids who could be great but have very little support at home to help them achieve.

Yep. That's exactly what depresses me.
Constant (and growing) cycle of don't-give-a-shite-about-being-a-productive-member-of-society.

It sucks. Kids who go through shite like this grow up to be a piece of shite just like their motherfrickin' father and then the cycle continues.

We beat his dad's arse down twice. Tried to help him. He was begging the cops to be removed from the situation but they wouldn't or couldn't do shite. Poor bastard never had a chance. I come from a good family and was always fed. We stole money just to feed him. Not proud of that but he was my brother in friendship.

Probably a majority in one way or another. The only solution is to curb the breeding, but it's hard to imagine that ever happening. I have zero faith that some great person will someday lead them out of the wilderness in numbers great enough to make a difference.
