Patriots Stars taking less money

How do the patriots convince their best players to take less than market value?
Brady signed an extension for 20.5 million per year for 2 years but that is still about 4 million less than he could have gotten on the open market. Edelman makes a little over $4 million per year, Gronk is making only $9 million annually. Hell McCourty turned down more money from the Giants to stay with the pats. How much of their success do you think stems from being able to use all that money to buy depth like Sheard and C Long among others

Well they signed Edleman after his first season staying healthy, and the previous offseason Edleman spent months on the FA market before resigning with the Pats. they had all the leverage
McCourty and Belicheck are real tight. As long as the offer was competitive, he was going to stay. He gave BB a chance to up his offer after the Giants tried to throw money at him and BB did right by him
Hopefully similar things happen with Hightower, Collins, Logan Ryan, Malcolm Butler, Sheard, etc in the near future

Incentives? Also knowing (in Brady case) that your income in endorsements will more than supplement a couple million in salary.
What is the difference in 11 million per year or 13? Really with that kind of money? Who cares? Do you want your games to matter every year or want to make an extra 2 million and be in Cleveland?

Different priorities. Would you rather make 9 mil at a first class organization like the Patriots or 12 mil at a losing franchise like the Browns?

By setting them up with supermodel girls

Kraft pays them under the table

Well it's not like those would be the only two options for Brady on the open market
QBs could make 30 mil a year on the open market, but they never make it on the market. NFL makes it virtually impossible to actually reach FA as an elite QB barring unforeseen circumstances that would drive your price down (Brees in 2006)

Brady makes about 7 million a year from endorsements.
Bunchen made 30 million last year.

In a profession with an extremely short life expectancy? Give me the money.

Between I think 2010 and 2016, Brady made more money from football than Brees.
I think they may take some discounts but it's largely overrated just how much they're taking.

Brady isn't the best example because his wife is insanely rich as well.
How much did McCourty turn down?
When Edelman signed that contract, he wasn't a big commodity. I also think teams would be leery hes just a system guy.
Gronk is paid top 5 at his position and is always injured.

It really is crazy how his value hasn't fallen drastically considering how often he's injured and how many games he misses.

It's probably be he has scored more TDs than anyone else since he's been in the league and is a lock to catch 10 TDs a season
Gronk is severely under paid. Pats signed him while he was recovering from injury and got him cheap. They are negotiating a new deal

Gronks Games played every season of his career
16

11
7

outside of two seasons with a freak injury and a cheap shot at his knees, he's been pretty durable
They are playing it safe with everyone this year so they held him out game 1

They extend them early so that they don't hit the open market

Seems fair given what he was when he signed it.

Also a fair contract equaling the 2nd most in the NFL for his position

Brady is a unique example due to the amount of endorsement money he makes and how much money his wife makes. He is not sacrificing anything by taking less money.

After thinking about it, I have a couple of reasons.
1) They trade away the people they cannot afford/won't take cheaper contracts. Chandler Jones, Richard Seymour, and Deion Branch.
2) They will cut players in a blink of an eye.
3) They are usually willing to negotiate a year or two ahead.
4) They have an amazing lockerroom culture, history of success, and Belichick has shown the ability to wring every single ounce of talent out of a player.
5) Amendola, Edelman, McCourty, and others have said on the record they don't mind taking a discount to play for Kraft and Belichick. Notably Edelman said right after the Superbowl he was happy Belichick brought him back. The media has made Belichick out to be the this crazy guy, but his players absolutely love him.
