Quick Review of my Trip to Fredericksburg, TX over Labor Day
Posted on 9/10/16 at 3:35 pm
Posted on 9/10/16 at 3:35 pm
Things I do not recommend:
1. Fredericksburg Brewery
2. Grape Creek Vineyards - only thing from there I do recommend is their pizza I had the Billy Goat
3. Messina Hof Winery
4. Fredericksburg Winery - only thing from there I do recommend is the Christmas Wine
5. Cabaret Grill
6. 4.0 Cellars - especially the Cheese and Wine tasting
Things I do recommend:
1. The Little White House at Tonkawaya Ranch B&B
2. Food and Wine Pairing tour with Cellar Wine Rats.
3. Inwood Estates Vineyards - if I had to live off a label for the rest of my life this is it. William Chris close second.
4. William Chris Vineyards
5. Kuhlman Cellars Signature Food and Wine Tasting.
6. Lost Draw
7. Old German Bakery - the smoked salmon Benedict was the best breakfast item I've ever eaten in my life.
8. Otto's - duck schnitzel is out of this world.
9. Hondo's on Main
10. Becker Vineyards.
11. Wedding Oak Winery at Wildseed Farms - Great Dry Wines
12. Garrison Brothers Distillery - these guys are amazing they instantly make you feel like part of the family. This is probably hands down the best part of my Trip. I cannot recommend these guys enough all their bourbon is made right here in Texas.
If anyone wants me to expound on anything let me know.

Nothing sucked about the brewery per se. They are an example of the over saturation of the craft beer market. Not everyone is making premium products. These guys are making beer that is equal to let's say Sam Adams or something along those lines. When I went they only had a half assed pale ale available and no IPA. I'm today's craft market not having a IPA or even a DIPA is a travesty.
They also have a biergarten in the back with awesome family style tables that they don't even use. They should be seating people in the back at the biergarten and not at the 4 tops up front.

Solid write up. What was the best place you recommend to eat at? And where if any place do you recommend going to grab a drink at night? TIA

Okay here's my beef with Fredericksburg. Over Labor day weekend with thousands of people influx into the area over 80% of the shops still close st 5pm? I really don't get it. It isn't even dark until 8:30pm. You could walk up and down main street and the vast majority of shops and whatnot are closed. Same goes for restaurants and whatnot. Some closed at 9pm some at 10pm. I just don't get that at all. For the most part we just went to wherever had live music. I think the best spot we found was Silver Creek. The Auslander had live music, but the band is all the way in the back left corner along a very long and narrow room so you aren't very close. Altdorf had a band I believe. Someone recommended Der daiwal which is a rock bar to us, but we never got around to checking it out.

Odd. I've been there but never really checked out the town. A lot of golfing. Would like to check it out next time I go. Sounds like a cool city. But not happy to hear about spots closing early

We usually go deer hunting here.

Shame to hear Cabernet Grill was a disappointment. I was there last in April 2014 and had a fantastic dinner. Things can change in that time though.
However, glad Becker and William Chris were on the good list! Definite favorites of mine.
I found that really strange as well. Everything just seemed to shut down out of no where. When your day is spent touring wineries, you come back and it's like there's nothing else to do. We went to Luckenbach for some sort of nightlife, but it's a pity there's nothing in town to fill that need.

Passed through Fredericksburg today on my from west Texas
They had a big tent set up and signs for wine and music festival on the fourth Saturday of the month. The town center was packed with people and the weather was glorious.
Me and Mrs Supatigah will be making a overnight trip there and I will report back to the board.

Central Texas just doesn't have the climate to grow wine grapes. I'm surprised you found any that you actually liked .

There are some awesome varietals coming out of here. Very quality wine. The new Napa Sonoma.

Shows what you actually know. It's becoming a huge wine region that will be second to napa within a few years. Over 30 vineyards in and around the town.
We love it and go every year. We belong to a Texas wine club and they have some really good wines. It's an awesome area
Also to the OP, did you go to Perdenales Brewery in town? We really enjoyed the taproom. Very good IPA

I did. It's good I'm a fan of big IPAs as in 100+ IBUs. Even their "Hop Bomb" IPA is only 80 IBUs. They are decent and I only drink Texas beer so they are in my rotation.

The new Napa Sonoma
I understand the excitement of having a developing wine region in your backyard but slow your roll. It takes more than a couple vineyards and a couple with wineries to get on par with a napa Valley region or the many appellations of Sonoma County. Those places have decades of experience with soil types, infrastructure, marine layer changes, sugar development, harvest windows, access to good wine makers, etc. Making good wine takes more than you think.

Was only there for 1.5 days and a night. Interesting place to visit. Not into the wine scene but obviously a hot spot for those who are.
Loved the WWII Pacific Museum. My wife enjoyed the shops on Main St.
As another poster mentioned, everything closes really early.
