Discovery Channel’s new series “Taking Fire” offers incredible insight into what combat was like in Afghanistan’s deadliest region.

Documentaries about war are often shown through the lens of a civilian reporter attached to a frontline combat unit, and though the stories are frequently profound, there’s something missing: The first-person perspective of those who do the bulk of the fighting, killing, and dying in war.

An upcoming documentary series aims to provide just that.

The Discovery Channel’s “Taking Fire” follows a six-man assault team with the Army’s 101st Airborne on their deployment to a farflung outpost in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley in 2010. The footage, shot entirely by the soldiers through a mix of helmet and digital cameras, paints a visceral picture of what a year-long tour in Afghanistan’s deadliest region was like. ...

Seems that would be extremely high losses although i guess if you broke down a war into region by region it could be possible. Truly sucks for those serving if true.

I was with the unit that handed off the Korengal to 173rd (Restrepo guys). To get anywhere near the 50% they would have had to account for injuries as well. We had just as many KIA as did 173rd in the valley. The company size elements were 100 to 150 soldiers in the valley at once. No unit took 50-75 casualties during a single deployment.

Looks real good but I hope this does not catch on.

We don't need TV shows and soldiers out there competing for ratings.
