Anyone played ARK: Survival Evolved?

I'm looking into getting this game this weekend for myself and my daughter to play. She's really into dinosaurs, and I enjoy MMOs occasionally. This seems like a good game where we can both work to build up a character together.
Anyone have any tips for me? Other than the obvious survival gameplay, what should I be expecting with this game?

Beware of the DONG!
Seriously you start naked with your dick swinging, I sure there is an option to turn it off though.

FWIW despite being in Early Access and therefore not finished, the Devs have already started releasing pic DLC.
I don't support that type of business practice, so I removed it from my Wishlisht. You do you though.

I played it once and quit, the UI looked terrible. Looked like a 5th grader designed it.

This is my first time dealing with a game that has done this, and I do find it odd. How can they be releasing paid DLC for a game that isn't complete?
I'm mostly just giving it a shot because of my kid's obsession with dinosaurs. I'm hoping it isn't a complete disappointment.
Apparently I get a free trial this weekend, so maybe we'll find out we don't like it.

Cash
Rules
Everything

Me
And Valve lets devs get away with anything on Steam

Looks like they may have changed it and you start with underwear. I know it used to be the other way though.

Survival evolved huh. Kind of like beating an inferior opponent by recovering a fumble in your own endzone in OT. That is true survival.

That's a relief. My wife probably wouldn't have been ok with my 9-year old playing a game as a dude with his dong flopping around everywhere.

I've played, and have some friends that play regularly.
It's like what I assume is minecraft with dinosaurs and better graphics.
You start naked, have to find a way to make fire or risk freezing to death...make clothes, shelter etc. Eventually you can tame dinosaurs and hunt with them. They will randomly destroy your forts if they aren't fortified good...other players will break in to your place and steal things.
It's not really an MMO...running in to people is pretty rare. When I joined my friends on their server, they were flying around on dinosaurs trying to find me to help me out...took like half an hour. The game is unforgiving to put it mildly. Many a lost corpses in the beginning.

Thanks. I just played it for an hour. It seems pretty decent. I'll probably be purchasing it.

The dongs swinging about was Rust. I don't remember ARK ever being that way.

I've been doing more research and found out they don't remove your avatar from the game when you log out (you "go to sleep"). This means people or animals can kill you, enslave you, or steal from you while logged out. Such a garbage mechanic. I'm not sure I'm getting it now.

Evidently some of the big mine craft streamers play and stream this as well, because my 9 year old is obsessed. He's never even played it but watches streams constantly. Spent at least 30 minutes this morning jabbering nonstop about this expansion.

Now it makes sense why my 9 year old is so obsessed with it.

Yeah, it's a big part of these type of games. Not really a garbage mechanic, just isn't something great for casuals. You can fix some of this by running your own server.

You're right, they came out about the same time and I got them mixed up.

I recommend you find a good private server to play on, with an active admin and a good set of rules. The official servers are not moderated and trolls live there. The downside of a private server is that you are relying on the admin to keep the server up, and he might decide to take a week off to play Fallout4.
