Not simply single words like previously believed, but evidence now shows that dogs process language much like humans do.

quote:

Researchers in Hungary scanned the brains of dogs as they were listening to their trainer speaking to determine which parts of the brain they were using.

They found that dogs processed words with the left hemisphere and used the right hemisphere to process pitch — just like people.

My dog must have an overactive right brain. She'll run away at the slightest increase in speaking volume, even if its not related to anger or directed at her.

Or she could just be a retard.

Dogs make use of Oxytocin which is the love hormone. Dogs develop a bond with their owner which extends far beyond behavioral attachments. Dogs actually do love their owners.

Also, dogs react to praise from those close to them better than food or other material reward.

LINK

quote:

The dog and cat study showed that neither species consistently increased oxytocin in humans. Only 30 percent of participants had an increase in oxytocin after playing with an animal. We found that one factor predicted whether playing with a dog would increase oxytocin: the lifetime number of pets of any type one had owned.

The opposite was true for those who interacted with cats. Greater lifetime pet ownership caused oxytocin to fall linearly. Dogs are simply more "people-oriented" than cats, and previous pet ownership seems to have trained our brains to bond with them.

We also found that dogs reduced stress hormones better than cats (no surprise there!). When stress hormones were lower, people in the experiment trusted strangers with more of their own money. This may tell us why people who own dogs are judged as more trustworthy than those who don't. The human-canine bond appears to be powerful and important to both species.

Dogs love you 5x more than cats
quote:

According to the report, it had to do with the chemical, oxytocin. It’s also known as the love hormone, which releases during times of bonding or when a mother is feeding her newborn.

Dogs had higher levels of oxytocin than cats when they saw their owners. Scientists studied how cats and dogs alike reacted to their owners before and after seeing them. Researchers were able to gather data from a group of dogs and cats by taking samples of their saliva. They did this by taking the saliva samples, allowing the pets to play with their owners for 10 minutes, then obtaining a subsequent sample. It showed that dogs love their owners up to five times more than cats do.

quote:

For the most part, dogs are social animals and thrive on human interaction. This is why the latest study concluding that dogs love their owners five times more than cats do may not come as a complete surprise to dog owners. Cat owners will declare that their felines love them just as much, but express it in a different way.
