And isn't flood insurance something you pay for in one payment each year?
I have long advocated - on this forum and others - that this has GOT to change. There needs to be monthly premium options for flood insurance if we are ever going to increase the percentage of people holding coverage.
However, anyone who is required to have insurance, and has escrow, is basically paying monthly.

Unless your mortgage company works it into your house note.
But yes... people with no mortgage would have to pay the entire amount upfront.

So... over those years, have you not gotten any benefits form paying those taxes? None?
Of course you get benefits. Everyone gets benefits. Thats the point of taxes. Police, fire dept, roads, schools, etc.
I kind of thought that was understood.

But be man enough to admit that it is a handout, and you are no better than anyone else who gets a handout.
So the 50 year old person that has been paying taxes for 30 years, has never been on govt assistance, and is in the position we are talking about is in the same boat as a person that has been on govt assistance and working the system?
I consider a handout being something given to you when you had no part in contributing to the system.
And if it came down to your simple be man enough and say its a handout, im sure the people going through this will tell you its a handout to appease you.

Ah... but there is a large portion of people affected by this flood that weren't required to carry flood insurance based on flood projections made by FEMA.

Yeah that is tough for some people. However....anyone taking FEMA money will have to do this now. Of course, I couldn't imagine anyone that was affected that rebuilds their home or whatever and is like "nah I don't need flood insurance".

Sorry Nurse, accidentally down voted. Obviously meant to up vote.

I didn't even flood and I don't think it's a handout. I'd like to see all the hardworking people affected by this receive grant money they need to start rebuilding.

Festus, that won't happen. It is really not good to wish the worst on others. Some of us have been through more than others. Think before you post.
Trust me, I thought it through thoroughly. Watching you pontificate while looking down on others who have gone through such tragedy, from your high throne...well, I've thought about it again.
Hoping for black mold. For you, and your family. And a surprise that you never obtained the endorsement. Then, that you come post about it on here and other senseless posters deluge you with "I told you so". And it runs you off to start posting on Reddit or some other site.

Yeah I would really love for all the posters basically saying "yeah it sucks...but you should have had flood insurance, only a moron doesn't have it living in LA" to go tell that face to face to those affected by this right now.
Tell that to them as they are crying cause they don't know how they are going to cope with this loss.

Yeah, I am going to stop posting in any flood-related thread. I thought that the point of these threads was to help flood victims get the best info fast. Too many have chosen to turn threads like these into discussions of tangential issues and bickering. I wasn't here for those reasons.
Best of luck to all flood victims.

I think thats the point.
These taxpayers have been putting into the system their whole lives. The one time they will actually need financial assistance in maybe their whole lives, it isnt there. Meanwhile, some people get assistance nonstop at the expense of said taxpayer.
It isn't fair, but you knew that already, or at least you should have known that. You know what else isn't fair? Your neighbor with $30k in structural damages has been paying his $450 annual flood insurance premiums every year and he likely won't see a penny from FEMA. Meanwhile, FEMA will "reward" your lack of prudent financial planning and accountability by paying for the repairs you need to your home up to $30k.
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have insurance and be pissed about your handout than not have insurance at all, but let's be real. Do any of you genuinely want to trade places with someone who is getting this personal property grant money and has been a leech forever? Do you really believe their situation is a better deal than yours? If so, you're welcome to join them slumming it up.

Well unfortunately they're full of misinformation and comments about hating democrats and Obama.
The truth is that your credit score and income have NO BEARING on your FEMA housing aid. However, they could affect how much, if any, you receiving for personal items and vehicles. In summary, the title of this thread is patently false.

This is a very important thread. People need to know how FEMA works. People who need FEMA assistance especially need to know now FEMA works.
I hope you have learned how FEMA works since you've been proven wrong multiple times in this thread. The title of the thread and OP have also been proven wrong multiple times. It's important that people actually read the whole thing, instead of just the title, so they're not misinformed.

Because that's exactly what we are saying here.

Two things I'll add:
1) we are not applying for DSNAP. We could get it but we don't need it.
2) when I spoke to my insurance agent to add flood insurance (this is one of the FEMA stipulations for a grant), he noted that we are still in an X zone. I can get insurance for $389 per year. If anything, this makes me feel worse that I didn't have it before.

I think everyone should just stop paying their mortgage and quit their jobs. Lay back and get that shitty credit and you'll have no problem getting assistance to replace that little box under the interstate during the next flood event.

Can people stop acting like income or credit rating has anything to do with assistance. TIA.

I wonder what will happen with the flood zones after this. Does anyone know how often they review them and make changes?

Nurse, I don't know you but I know this has had a huge impact on your parents, and for that, I am genuinely sorry.
The "you should have had flood insurance" comments seem to start because some people continue to have trouble acknowledging the truth of that statement. Those same people are now losing their mind that the government won't replace their personal belongings after they've spent years preaching about personal accountability and what not on this very board. Unfortunately the chickens have come home to roost for many of those people, and while I wholeheartedly feel for everyone affected by the flooding, I hope they can take a step back in the future and learn not to be so judgmental of people who have fallen on hard times and need government assistance.
The opinions expressed by many people in this thread who are considered to be assholes are the same opinions expressed by this board in disasters across this country, but now that it has happened to our friends and family, they're suddenly off limits? Perhaps they should have been off limits from jump street.
Regardless, I hope everything works out for you and your parents.

They'll make changes. It might take a couple years though.
