A week in Napa or Sonoma?

The wife and I are planning a trip to wine country in October and I'm having a hard time deciding which region to choose. Planning seven days with two in San Francisco to hit a few highlights and then spending the rest in wine country. I'm not a sommelier or wine expert. I know the basics and not sure what to expect in the tastings or tours. Thoughts and recommendations are appreciated.

Napa and Sonoma are close enough to each other to enjoy both. There are plenty of wineries to choose from in both.
As for me I think I'd do another day in San Francisco. You could do Alcatraz (get tickets now if you're planning to go in October), the Palace of Fine Arts, the Golden Gate park, the Golden Gate bridge, cable cars, Union Square, Muir Woods - there's a lot of stuff to see and do. Depends on what you're wanting to do.

Four days is enough to do both. If I were you, I would plan day 1 in Napa, day 2 in Sonoma, and them return to where you want to explore more. Both have their positives and negatives.

If you are in Cloverdale, check out my cousin's winery - J. Rickards Winery. Great wines and they are good people!

Napa - easier to get around, better restaurants.
Go tour Sonoma for the day, but stay in Napa (not the city)

I assume that's a compliment...

I haven't been to their winery, yet, but have heard good things. Lived on the east coast for so long and haven't made it since we moved to the west coast. Hope that changes in the near future.

Cloverdale is a great little town. It's just a little bit country so the snobs in Healdsburg like to throw bombs their way.

Yeah, they're pretty close so you can't really go wrong with either. Stay in one and use as a springboard to check out the other towns-Petaluma, and Calistoga are nice as well. Oh yeah.. Don't drive drunk. They don't mess around.

I've thought about spending more time in San Francisco. I do a little photography on the side and the city looks great for that.

Appreciate that advice. I haven't even thought about driving after all the drinking. Guess I'll have to take it slow and relax to give time to drive between wineries.

We hired a driver who came to the house we were staying in and drove our rental car. Highly recommend that. Just take the worry out of it. Plus she would do things like call in a lunch order for us to pick up on our way to the next spot.

Luxe B&B in Calistoga is the only place we stay. We stayed there several times and were never disappointed. Yes, it is the most northern city in Napa, but all of the restaurants are in walking distance. There's some incredible boutique wineries up there too. For around $300/nt, you get a 4 course breakfast in the morning. Then from 5-7 every night, the serve wine and cheese on the porch. And they pour some really nice wines! We are going back in late October! PM me if you need some wine advice or have any other questions.

4 days in Napa/Sonoma. thats a shite load of wine, lol
Napa has more to do and is more commercialized, but i like sonoma better. its more wine country feel to it.
my favorites were St Francis and Benzinger
downtown Napa has some cool places to eat.
