Yea, I bring our BMW to an indy, my Tacoma gets the drum oil.

now THOSE are the actual scams...

Nice. I wasn't a huge fan of their early 2000s models, but those are some good looking vehicles now.

I trust my guy. If I were sell my car I'm sure he'd find me a buyer, if he didn't himself. He drools over it every time I bring it in, and I specifically ask for the A service. I guess he doesn't need to scam me when I actively pursue 'day it was made' performance.

I always laugh at the Walking Dead show. If there was an apocalypse you'd be finding BMWs, Maseratis, Porsche and Teslas everywhere abandoned in Arlington/Alexandria. It wouldn't be these big F350s.

I used to use 5 minute oil change until I brought by car to get the oil changed a week or two after replacing my radiator. Dude comes to my window and tells me that he looked at the fluid in my radiator and it really needs to be flushed. I said "that's funny, it's a brand new radiator and fluid, didn't realize they had to be flushed weekly."
The look on his face was priceless.

They work hard to convince you that you need extras, like a new air filter, that you really don't need.
Posted on 8/20/16 at 10:53 am to doublecutter
they usually state what oil they use and the filters they use.
What is inferior oil?
As long as it meets its viscosity rating you are getting what you paid for.

What is your point? I
I probably should have left the model out but the point is if all I use are these places, my cars don't seem to care. Thought that was pretty clear, guess not.

All I know is I brought my truck to one of these speedy places. 2 weeks later I had to bring it to the shop.
They put a shitty oil in it. A good oil is something I definitely don't mind spending a little extra on.

I don't really have a Maserati.

I take 5 quarts and I get mid-grade synthetic blend... GTX or something similar... good for 5k miles or better
Outside of the "scam" of replacing parts that don't need to be replaced, this is the other scam. I get Mobil1 and those SOBs still slap a sticker on the window saying I need service every 3k miles. That is pure horseshite. If a vehicle is driven in normal conditions on a regular basis, you can easily get 10k miles out of quality synthetic oils.

I could change my own oil since I need synthetic. I always check out Groupon for cheap deals in the $50 range instead of paying over $100 at the dealership.

No, they aren't a scam unless they are doing unauthorized work. You get what you pay for.

My Avalanche has 203k miles on it and I've had every oil change done at a local lube place that takes 5 minutes to change it. I've never had a single issue with them. Do my brakes as well $90 an axel if I supply the pads. Love that family.

I don't bother with the quicky places. They've become a rip. The last time I went to jiffy lube the tried to charge me almost $100 just for an oil change in a freaking Honda civic. I talked them down but wtf? I go to reputable tire and brake type places now who use it as a loss leader. It usually doesn't take much longer if at all.
In my big diesel I change it myself because wallyworld carries the premium oil i use and OEM filter for dirt cheap. Places charge a pretty premium for a 7.3l diesel, and I'm emotionally attached to my truck so I don't like people poking on her. The last time the Ford dealer changed it they charged me like $150 and I'm sure it's more now.

I don't know how they can drain oil in 5 minutes, do they pump it out? My truck takes a lot longer than 5 minutes.
Yes. They vacuum it out and pump in the new. $38 and top off my fluids in under 10 min. Worth it to me these days. But there was a time when I had a set up(ramps and catch Basin etc) in my garage to change both cars' oil.
Tldr : not a scam for average vehicle oil change.
