People Begging For Flood Money on GoFundMe?

I've seen at least 3 people on my FB feed ask for monetary help and link to their GoFundMe page. These are acquaintances who lived in $500k+ houses but are whining that they lived in a 100yr flood plain & therefore didn't have flood insurance.
I'm finding it really hard to feel bad for anyone who lives in a half a million dollar house in n SE La that wouldn't pay the $500 or so a year for flood insurance. Who cares if you're not required to have it. You still live in a swamp, near a lake, along a river etc. Hell I live in Dallas and have flood insurance.

I will help as many as I possibly can, and be less judgmental doing so

How did they build homes in a flood plain and were not required to carry flood insurance?

I saw someone started a page and was taken back myself. There are people way less fortunate.
I know they raised about 1200 last time i saw

I've seen a lot of such things as well. People with paid off mortgages down in Gálvez with no flood insurance.(or who cancelled it).
I sympathize but damn dude how you gonna not have insurance? Just stupid.

No way I'm giving anyone with a $500k house a dime for assistance on gofundme. Shame on you for not paying the $1000 +/- a year for flood insurance.

This kind of sentiment has been blasphemous in these threads of late. If you can't afford to insure your house, then you certainly cannot afford to self-insure it, and ultimately you cannot afford the house at all. Downsize.

That they obviously couldn't afford.

Are they hiring? I would love to work my way up to be that rich.

I guess people do what they feel they have to do, maybe I have too much pride, but I can not imagine starting a GoFundMe page asking people for money, especially when there are people who need it more.
Fortunately I didn't have any damage and I do not know first hand what its like to lose everything, but GoFundMe would be my absolute last resort.

I also have seen multiple people on my FB feed with GoFundMe requests. All are more modest homes (guessing 200-300k), were not in flood plains, and appear to be good people. If I had more funds available, I would help. However, I will probably just do nothing and feel lucky that I'm not in their situation.

Dual income families that are drowning in debt (no pun intended) need to live in their means. Meaning, if you buy a $500k house in the GD swamp, you add that flood insurance policy. This may mean the Misses may have to settle with laminate countertops instead of quartzite.
