Unless you're a suspect of terrorism, espionage, etc. there's really only a handful of good reasons to detain a foreigner in a country like Brazil. Especially given how corrupt their government is at this point.
They're under the authority of Brazilian law and aledgedly committed a crime. The first thing you do is not let them leave until it's sorted out. Not hard to understand.

Crazy thing is he went on live tv (The Today Show) and gave a full detailed story of the "robbery." That's some Grade A acting right there. I'd be too nervous to pull that off in front of the world

I have yet to see charges filed against any of those swimmers.
It should've been handled through the embassy there and not US citizens being yanked off planes with passports revoked.

Yeah if this was reverse and some foreigners did this in America they would be calling Obama a pussy for letting them leave.
They broke the law by fabricating a police report so even though the penalty isn't big I would say the local government has a right to make them go speak with the police and get it sorted out before they leave.

I can assure you Rio's reputation didn't take much of a hit.

So what type of consequences are they looking at? Public apology?
In Brazil? Paying a lot of money to the right people.
I don't blame Lochte for absconding.

They boo'd other competitors and cheered when they screwed up. Reputation is just fine.

Pulling swimmers of planes and revoking passports for this is ridiculous. It easily could've been handled between the Embassy there and lawyers.
Making up a bullshite, serious story that becomes a worldwide headline? I say ship Locthe back to Brazil and let all the swimmers spend a month or two in a Brazilian prison.

It's shitty that they lied about it. And if they broke Brazilian law then they should be charged for it.
But until they are charged, and until it's more than a misdemeanor-esque charge, then Rio has no business pulling them off planes and revoking their passports. Sorry, but that's the truth of it. I don't give a shite what media ran with the little bit of information that leaked out without vetting their pretty biased sources.
And no, I wouldn't want US citizens sitting a "month or two" in the jail of a country that is so corrupt that they're arresting government officials left and right because they lied over something that pretty petty in the grand scheme of things. That's utterly ridiculous. Pull their sponsorships, suspend them from Olympic-qualifying events, whatever. But months in a Rio jail? Some of y'all have lost your damn minds.

Had anyone seen the store video of the urination and the exposed buttocks?

They shouldn't go to jail, but they also shouldn't be allowed to just run off b/c they come from a bigger country.
They embarrassed a whole bunch of people and potentially committed crimes and should be made to answer for their actions like anyone else.
This is akin to the kid from a prominent family getting away with whatever he wants.

They really showed their asses to the world

Play dumb games, win dumb prizes. Brazil had every right to detain the athletes after their story didn't make sense. Just because Brazil is corrupt doesn't mean they didn't commit crimes and it doesn't mean they shouldn't be held responsible for committing those crimes in that country. I don't care if we are America and they are Brazil.

Why should they get special treatment because they're from the US?

Lochte does have a kind of Hansel "quality" to him.
Richard Gere's a real hero of mine. Sting. Sting would be another person who's a hero. The music he's created over the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's making it, I respect that. I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I'm selling? No. Do I know what I'm doing today? No. But I'm here, and I'm gonna give it my best shot.
