Honestly it's not
I can never tell what this board thinks of him.

Top 5 "stuff" for sure. Dude's curve was sick.

As was his right fist to Robin Ventura...

Great pitcher? absolutely
Can't put him in the top 5 though.

Top 40?
Gawdy stats and 7 no-no's. But was very hittable. When he was not being un-hittable.
Incredible career though. From Miracle Mets to beating Ventura up, that's a long career.

Absolutely Top 10, definitely could make an argument for Top5.
A record seven no-hitters (three more than anybody in history) and recording 5,714 strikeouts (839 more than runner-up Randy Johnson) Pitched for 27 seasons.

He's #31 all-time on my list. From his era, Seaver, Niekro, Blyleven, Carlton, Perry and Jenkins were all better pitchers.

Of course Gibson's better but I don't really consider him a peer of Nolan Ryan. He's 12 years older and his prime occurred in the 60s when Ryan was just beginning his career.

and the top 40 is damn fantastic. when people make these damn lists they generally don't know very many "candidates" and (or) they only rank recent ones (because they are young and nothing good happened before they were born).
ryan pitched a long time and when he was on he was unhittable. but rankings are so difficult when you consider the number of pitchers. hell, sandy Koufax was better than ryan and so was ron Guidry. but they only pitched at a high level for five or six years.

I'm not being argumentative, but Niekro & Perry are both 77.

Not a good argument, he is between 15-20 all-time at best.

His "era" was 25 years. That's part of his greatness is that he did it for so long. I would probably put him top 15 or so.
