If you buy a used vehicle from an individual, how does insurance coverage work? Do you have to purchase insurance beforehand?

If you want to be insured you do.

If you don't already have an insurance policy, yes. If you already have a policy for other vehicles, you're generally automatically covered on new purchases for up to 30 days.

Do you currently have a car and insurance?
Just call your agent, tell him what car you are going to buy and its VIN and he will bond you coverage for that car.
That is how it has worked for me in the past.

14 days. You have 14 days for a newly acquired vehicle as long as you already had a policy.

you need to at least have liability on the vehicle BEFORE you transfer the title to your name.

Do you already have insurance on another vehicle? If so, you get a grace period of 30 days to obtain insurance on the new vehicle.

The LA state law is 14 days, not 30

If you are replacing a car already insured its 15 days. If you are adding on a not replacing its 5 days. If you have no insurance there not any coverage

Well here is a new question. If you are raising a child, who is not related to you, and they are getting their learners permit, do you have to insure them in this learner's permit year and if not what happens if they have a wreck. I am not a legal guardian....it is a long story. When they get an actual license and policy in a year can I add them to my policy? Parents are findable, but not involved.
