Is LSU a better option for grad school compared to Texas, Rice,Alabama or Michigan? I am going for my PhD in Archaeology.

Johns Hopkins is better than the aforementioned schools.

The first trick to getting a masters is spelling the standard way the science spells the field.

The better question is which one can you afford that is a better fit for you. When looking at any degree whether bachelor's or advance, where you want to be 10 years after it? Just becuase one wchool has a name doesn't mean it's the right one for you so fit is important.
For advance degree what area you specializing in and who would be your best mentor?

OK. Good. The next step is easy...kinda.

Know what you want to research then contact the leading person in that field and see if they'll take you as an advisee.

If you want to work at LSU one day, go somewhere else for grad school. They are notorious for not hiring their own.

This doesn't really apply in grad school as most programs offer teaching or research assistantships that pay for most or all of your school and give you a stipend.

The OP needs to figure out what area he wants to study, and find a professor that studies it. The school/program is less important as a PhD tends to be more self guided and centered around your research group.

Once you find a couple of professors that research what you are interested in, you contact them about a position. Many PhD programs will not accept you without having a major professor lined up.

You must not be in oil and gas or any sort of land development.

Think about this, Michigan is the number one school for anthropology which archeology falls under. Also LSU doesn't have a phd in anthropology it would technically be a geography phd. They do accept phd students who do archeology but your be getting a geography phd.

What do you want to do with it?

Ditto chappy: don't go to LSU if you'd like to work there someday.

That's actually quite common for a university not to hire their own graduates. It's pretty frowned upon to do it, at least for the first 5 years or so after graduation.

I know nothing about LSUs archeology Ph.D. Program. Not to be a dick but if you need to ask about where to do ph d research then I think you don't need to be doing ph d research yet. If that is what you want to do then you will at least be a "master" and better informed then tigerdroppings (probably not bc tigerdroppings is all knowing)
