Veteran defensive end Dwight Freeney signed with Atlanta on Tuesday, the team announced. Freeney chose the Falcons over the Bengals, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source with knowledge of the deal.

Surprising he chose Atlanta over a contender in Cincinnati.

Either way, he has a little left in the tank with situational pass rushing. He should be able to get 5-6 sacks, give or take a few.

Can we just make this a Falcons pre-season thread? Would be good to hear people's opinions on moves without having to have new threads.

Not like either team is winning a playoff game

Word out of camp is that the defense is playing lights out, this might just be the piece to push them into elite territory

I doubt Atlanta is anywhere near elite on defense in 2016, and a player like Dwight Freeney surely wouldn't push them over the top. They've made some nice additions, but they still have a ways to go.

They are certainly moving in the right direction, though.

Keanu Neal laid the wood on Tamme and Weems yesterday

I know we won't be "elite", but I could see top ten being a legitimate possibility

What?

Did you miss how good Cincy was in 2015? They started off 8-0, went 12-4, barely lost to the Super Bowl champs (overtime) and Andy Dalton was an MVP candidate before he went down with injury. AJ McCarron filled in and they still did fine. They would've won a playoff game if PacMan Jones and Vontez Burfict didn't melt down at the end of the game against Pittsburgh.

Cincy is much better than Atlanta.

You'll get about 10 plays a game out of him.

16th last year only eight yards a game off 10th. I don't think it's that crazy to say...

Wasn't Atlanta also last in that NFL in sacks? 19?

No denying we need a legit pass rush to get better but we were 14th in points allowed as well... A couple third down stops a game and we are top ten in both ppg and yards

C'mon, man. You don't know you shouldn't dare speak positively about the Falcons on the MSB?...

If Dalton goes down, they'll be playing for all the marbles

Cincy is as good as a contender as anybody. These people have terrible memory. If not for injuries and Dalton being slow to take that next step (that he seemed to take last year?) they would've won a playoff game or two by now.
