Has anyone had any children or family that went through the whole EBR Magnet school program? Its getting close to choose which school our child is going to attend, and im 100% sure that he will be accepted into the catholic school that’s in my parish. But were looking at the magnet school options, like Westdale Heights, BR FLAIM, BRCVPA, Dufrocq Academic to save on paying tuition.
Any experiences?

I went to the old McKinley Middle in the mid 90's. It was awful...

The magnet schools are generally pretty solid but the application period was in the spring? How do you plan on just picking a school when the elementary ones are based on the lottery system?

We're gonna be applying next spring. I'm doing research on how the school selection goes.
I would "like" him to get into westdale heights or FLAIM on Mayfair. But if he gets selected to the performing arts, or dufroq program, then we'll roll with it. Since it all feeds into McKinley and Sherwood middle

Yea. Now they're polar opposite from how they were before.

BRMHS has an amazing student population. I hope Lee Magnet can do the same.

Application period usually runs between October and December for the following year, and acceptance letters went out in January. Some schools will open up a 2nd application period if they have spots that aren't filled. So if you're looking for a Kindergarten spot for the 2017-2018 year, you need to apply in a few months.
EBRPSS usually has a Magnet Mania Fair one Saturday in October at Cortana Mall, which showcases all the programs in the magnet schools and Gifted/Talented schools. Open Houses at the various schools are in October (although some will give you a tour at other times if you call and schedule one).

It worked well until high school. Then the kids not in gifted program started being teenagers. Thieving, drugs, etc.
I do realize all high schools have some degree of these things.
I saved nine years of tuition.

I have friends with kids in Westdale. They really like it. It's the only public school I ever heard ppl talk about in a good light while we were there.

I would recommend attempting to get your kid into the Gifted Program. Most of the time, the schools are better all around, and the classes are smaller and more hands on. Your kid has to test into it, though.
If you have to go the magnet route, a coworker of mine said that Westdale is legit. Dufrocq Montessori is also very nice.

K-5 public schools aren't bad. But by 6th grade you'll want to be in the catholic schools.
It's more than just paying tuition for learning. You are paying for the environment. Worth every penny IMHO.

I am a teacher at a magnet HS and I have firends who teach all throughout the gifted and magnet programs from elementary through HS. As long as the kid stays in the magnetic/gifted program they are good. You can get kicked out for behavior and grade issues. You can't fail a class and you must retain a 2.5 gpa throughout. Also, behavior issues of any kind will result in you going to your home school.

Will Lee Magnet be only magnet kids?
That is the key to a good magnet HS. When you start having a mixture of regular HS kids and magnet kids....you are going to have problems. You just can't really mix those two groups of kids at a HS level.
Take SMHS for example....20 years ago it was only magnet and considered to be a great public school, up there with BRMHS. Then they decided to let neighborhood kids go. School went to complete shite soon after they did this. I was very thankful I graduated the last year they were a true magnet school.

Lee will only be magnet.
It looks like it will be just like BR High, but with more sports.

BRCVPA is a great school. Good mix of art and academics. My son is at Sherwood now. The adjustments were tough, but I've been very pleased with it so far.

My kids are at BRFLAIM. We love it. It is doubling in size this year, so most applicants should be able to get a seat next year. The application period is in the fall. Kindergardeners have to pass a test to get in to school. It is not a problem to pass if the kid was in a quality preschool.
Lee High School is magnet only. They have baskeball there, BR High does not.
Nan McCann is the Principal of both BR High and Lee High. The programs are similiar, but Lee is more STEM/dual enrollment focused and BR High is general college prep/Advanced Placement focused.
This year everyone who applied to Lee or BR HS got a seat at either Lee or BR High.
