Great story Martini.

I bought my first shotgun on credit at 12 years old. I went into Keeth's Marine to fondle and dream of buying my "own" gun, when Bubba walked through just as I was taking a youth model 870 magnum down from my shoulder and staring at the price tag.

"Fits you good don't it?" he stated rather than inquired. My mama cut in, "do you have that much?" (money)

"No ma'am" ( I had a bit less than half what he was asking.) "Put it back" she said.

Bubba, still standing there said "Come'ere boy and lets see if we can make a deal"

Mama glared at Bubba and said " Bubba Keeth, whatever kinda deal y'all make, I'm not paying one penny for that shotgun. It'll be up to the two of you to work it out."

He put his arm on my shoulder and walked me privately down an aisle in the store, questioning me about how much I could put down, how much and how often I could pay, where I was going to earn the money and what kind of job security I had.

We walked back to the rack, took it down, picked up two boxes of shells and went up to the register for Tommy to ring me up.

Just under $200 down and $10/week till I paid her off. He showed me how to take it down and clean the shipping grease off of it while they drew up the sale.

Plenty of squirrels and doves a'plenty, but even more ducks fell to the full choke with 3" lead #4's until they were outlawed.

She's mostly a safe queen now....but my little girl is almost old enough....and I've got a couple of boys behind her.

$1200 for that one? No way!
$12,000 for mine? wouldn't buy it.

Wow. I'm pretty sure my dad bought my first 12 gauge, an 870 Express, at Keeth's. Unfortunately that gun was lost in a house fire.

walked into Bass Pro in Prattville, AL this past 4th of July weekend...my 13 year old had a pocket full of money leftover from his birthday and cutting grass....Remington was having a bicentennial sale going on and they had an 870 behind the counter he couldn't take his eyes off of...like he was looking at a cute blonde with a curvy arse...

anyway...when it was all said and done he still needed like 40 bucks to cover the tax....so I helped him out...against his mother's wishes...and he walked out with that brand new 870...grinning from ear to ear...his first gun purchase and one he earned in the hot summer cutting yards...

hopefully some day he will tell some sappy story about his dad and his first 870...

I've also got a Wingmaster that belonged to my deceased FIL...one of my boys will end up with that beautiful piece from the grandfather they never met...

this is yet another reason why Amendment #2 is so damned important

Was that Keeth's in Jonesville?

My first one was from Howard Brothers Discount. Second was from Steinbergs just a year or so before they closed.

Great story as well.
