While my daughter was at UNC, my wife and I would visit her once in the fall to catch a game. Now that she is graduated and moving to NYC, we'd still like to get together and take in a North Carolina football game. I threw out going to the Virginia - North Carolina game in Charlottesville as it is something new and it is supposedly the "South's Oldest Rivalry". Also, my daughter has been before and she said Charlottesville is a great town. UT is on the road that weekend (at Kansas State), so I'm getting pretty excited and thinking about booking soon.
What's the best way to get there? Fly into Richmond or DC and rent a car from there? I know Charlottesville is supposed to be a great town, but I'm under the impression that it's strictly a college town. Should we look for a hotel or bed and breakfast? Would tickets be fairly easy to snag or should I try and get them beforehand? How's the tailgating and restaurant/bars? Any place we must go and see? I'm certainly going to check out The Monticello.

Richmond would be easier. But Charlottesville does have an airport as well.

UVA games are very much a whine and cheese crowd.

Fly into DC or Charlotte and then fly into Charlottesville from there. Bodo's for breakfast, Tavola for dinner.
Stay at the Omni or Oakhurst.
Tickets are pretty easy to come by.
Plenty of tailgating. It's not LSU, but campus will be pretty busy for game day against UNC.

I went to a game there in September of 2009. I drove down from New Jersey to visit a family friend whose husband is a coach there(not football). I wouldn't recommend driving down from the north DC/Baltimore etc because there is no interstate or major road without numerous stop lights from that direction. It is basically a nice road and the country is beautiful, but you have to go through many many towns which equals lights, stop signs, and the like. You can't get. Rhythm going at all because your coming through a town every 10-15 minutes.
I think DC is about a 2+ HR drive plus Beltway traffic is notoriously bad. I would recommend trying to find something close if at all possible. ( unless you just really want to see some beautiful Virginia Farm country or want to visit Civil War cites).
I'm not familiar with Richmond so you'll probably have to look at maps, routes, etc. Also don't know about local airports but I figure it would be easier and cheaper to fly into a bigger city.
Charlottesville iself is a very cool town. Yes, it's basically a typical Southern College town. It has a strip close by campus with lots of bars and such like a Dickson Street or Sixth Street. It also has a local feel with down home looking joints and restaurants....but there's one significant thing that separates it from basically any other college....it was freakin designed by Thomas Jefferson!
The campus itself is beautiful. Jefferson's architecture is on full display...oh and Monticello is like 10-20 minutes up the mountain. And along the mountain road are old colonial taverns and gift shops where people wear 1700s clothing. There is also a museum just below Monticello (the house itself is way up on the mountain and not visible from the road or museum, you have to have a ticket for a tour to get there).
The museum is great and it will be packed. If you enjoy history, Charlottesville and the campus is amazing.
As for the football....well it ain't the SEC...you know that real quick. I tailgated on some concrete parking lot across the stadium and it sucked. Not many people and not much energy. The stadium itself is actually pretty cool and unique. It has giant columns and is sunken into the ground. You basically walk down into the bowl because I think it's built into a hill. It was full but not real packed...looked like you could easily get a walk up ticket. I imagine they wouldn't be that expensive either.
I sat in the coaches box so the seats were good, but the team sucked, I think they got beat by a 1AA team or some cupcake when I went. Anyway hope this helped, it's an enjoyable town and place, you should like it. The football is kind of secondary there.

Take the time to explore the entire western Va area. Beautiful place. Go to the Devil's Backbone brewery near Wintergreen.

I've never been, but that's bad arse that Thomas Jefferson designed their campus.
I just looked at their Charlottesville on Google maps and that place looks absolutely bad arse.

I haven't been for a game, but would definitely visit the town. I guess it's a "college town," but not exactly in the way most of us think of that term. It's a rich to upper middle class college town, so they have nice restaurants, shops, etc. It's not like you'll be stuck slumming in grungy college hangouts. The town is very walkable and nice. Beautiful campus, of course.

I'll be interested to see if Bronco Mendenhall actually makes UVA respectable.

dc is 2 hours. richmond is one hour. drive from dc is really pretty. charlottesville is in a scenic area, but it makes austin seem like plano politically.
uva football games are high schoolish. any high school game in the south provides a better atmosphere and experience. tickets will be plentiful and cheap. go to a game in blacksburg instead.

I visited Charlottesville last month when school just let out and I was a little underwhelmed with the city itself. I drove by their football stadium and it's neatly tucked on campus, similar to UGA, but on a much smaller scale. You can literally see down into the stadium from the road. As for downtown, meh. It's okay but nothing special. It's also not the most walkable college town I've visited. Everything seems spread out. The Shenandoah Valley is what makes the place feel special.
I know this didn't answer your question but go with low expectations and you probably won't be disappointed with your experience there.

Worth visiting the town and campus...if you can fly into Dulles, you're a lot better off there than National...
To someone from the SEC, it's probably a weird sort of feel...

Virginia (along with some other ACC schools) is what Ole Miss thinks it is but is actually not.
