I was told this last week that the Descent is supposed to be very good. I need to get around to watching it.

Portrait of a Serial Killer. And it's not even close. All those movies listed in this thread are entertaining and may really scare preteens. Portrait would scare Chuck Norris.

The Ring
Pulse (Japanese)
The Orphanage
The Changeling (George C. Scott)
(those movies were scary; played with your mind)
Descent (is up there) but so is Below. Trick R' Treat is well-done campy horror.
Never found Shining scary...or any crazy slasher movie.

Looks like everyone forgot 'The Grudge.'
I watched Ju On and Ju On 2 in the last few months and there's no way The Grudge is as good as those.

No it isn't scary...it's just sad and depressing and really not something you want to watch...that's not a scary movie...that's just depressing reflection of some horrible people in history...because we already know reality.
Scary, is what we don't know.

I saw The Descent in middle school and was absolutely horrified. It's the only movie I've seen to legitimately scare me... I was afraid to look outside the rest of the night
I also think I saw some scenes of Nightmare on Elm Street when I was like 9 and that also scared me a lot

Interesting response. You are more scared of grumpkins and snarks than reality? Did you find Das Boot scary?

Well I know crazy assholes exist.
So it's reality. It's not scary to me just disturbing and depressing.
What's scary is the unknown...
If it's well done...not just ghost story but psychological manipulation.

The Excorcist when it first came out. But I just rewatched it 30 years later and it is pretty dumb. Not scary at all.

a frickin men...that movie is great, terrifying and unsettling...when they are crawling under that rock, I cant watch it.
Everyone needs to see this one.
On a side note, the director's first film, Dog Soldiers, was badass as well. It wasn't scary necessarily, but it was about soldiers fighting werewolves. I highly recommend it

Maybe I missed it, but I can't believe The Strangers has not been mentioned. That was some chilling stuff there. So my list:
The Strangers
The Others
The Sixth Sense
the rest have already been listed from my list.
Although not necessarily very scary, Haunter was a very good film. It was well done and had a neat little plot idea to it.

1) Fire in the Sky
That's the only movie that's truly scared me.
