They are starting to think nobody wants to coach at their school.

Gee, what a wonderful press corps up in Michigan...

I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to be up there dealing with such warm, fuzzy, outstanding people.

As far as "nobody wants to coach at their school", I don't think they've gotten to the realization yet that top-flight candidates require top-flight money to consider a pressure-cooker of a job like Michigan.

Alabama is the same way, pressure-wise, but they've always been willing to pay coaches as long as they can win.

Michigan is trying to do this on the cheap and it's blowing up in their faces.

Actually we have always been cheap ntil this year. We finally stepped up to the plate. We traditionally have always had a very low paid coach compared to other big D-1 programs. There were several other SEC schools that were always higher than us, LSU being one of those.

any guess at what coach Bryant made a year at Alabama in his highest paid year?

I think you guys missed this, that article was reprinted on the Free Press site. The actual article first appreared in some New Jersey paper. www.freep.com just posted it on their site since it relates to the UM search.

The NJ media is brutal on Rutgers / Schiano, and always has been.

I don't think money is the biggest reason a coach takes a job. Sure, its important- but I think coaches look for things as it relates to their particuliar situation. The tradition, the facilities, recent win-loss records, climate, location of state, upside potential, what league the team is in (BCS), expectations, recruiting, and how the boss treats you.

Since he stopped coaching in what, 1982, this question is irrelevant.

Bama pays coaches what the market requires for that type of coach -- the past 3 guys you have hired before Nicky are not big money earners (Fran was the closest to that, and he sucked).

since when is it such a terrible thing for a coach to interview at another school and then turn them down? didnt schiano decide to stay at rutgers after all? So how is he lying about loyalty if he turned the job down and stayed at rutgers?

Arkansas is screwed because their coach beats the #1 team in the country and gets a Cotton Bowl invitation and still aren't happy with their coach.

Michigan thinks its an honor to coach there and won't pay very much even though they can.

Very weird. The last time I checked interviewing with another school and deciding to stay where you are isn't disloyal. Maybe local journalists like this made him think a change might be welcome. Then he realized Mich has Mitch Albom

The Detroit Free Press pays attention to The University of Michigan coaching search right now only because (1) baseball season is over/hasn't started, (ii) the Lions are, at best, boring, (iii) the Pistons' season doesn't really start until sometime in May, and (iv) there's only so much you can write about the Red Wings. Detroit may only be an hour from Ann Arbor, but in every meaningful sense, it's on another planet.

according to mlive.com, due to the outcry from former players over the mishandling of Miles, UM is putting $ together and getting ready for another run at Les.

The irony in all of this is the next university in this position could well be LSU

Not to defend the Michigan press corps, as they have their problems too, the article was actually written and published in New Jersey, and then reprinted in Michigan.

I wonder why the writer expects more loyalty of coaches than he does of the schools that hire them. Every coach knows that his job is in jeopardy is he goes 2 or 3 seasons without winning at the level expected by the administration and fans, regardless of the circumstances. Some, like Bower, have had enormous loyalty and have been successful only to have their loyalty rewarded by being forced out of the job. It seems hypocritical of the press and the fans to expect coaches to be loyal to schools when the schools have no loyalty to the coaches and will fire them at the drop of hat. Should Alabama fans expect more loyalty from Shula than Alabama gives back, for example.

College football is a business first and foremost to the administrations that hire coaches. College administrations have no more loyalty to coaches than a Fortune 500 company whose stock goes in the toilet has for its CEO. Why should such loyalty be a one way street.

If Les were to go to Michigan and have 3 losing seasons in a row, do you think Michigan would show any loyalty (any more than LSU would)? Not on your life. So when fans and writers criticize coaches for lack of loyalty, maybe they should examine themselves on that subject as well.
