Leon doesn't seem like a guy ready to eat his own bullet at the 1st sign of shite going sideways.
I also think it's pretty safe to assume that Elliot did time because white rose new his mental condition was slipping.

Also I understand Joanna's plan but it seems like a hard sell that he would have decided to murder his wife at a crowded party on the best day of his life.

Elliot did time because he hacked and blackmailed the guy in season 1 and stole his dog. The guy who was dating his therapist and was lying to her about his real identity.
