Because America is following down their exact path to downfall and collapse as a society.
People always say this but I wonder how similar they are. I don't think they're similar except both are/were big.
they're not similar ... romans lasted a 1000 years ... we won't make 500 ...
i'm a fan of victorian english and the renaissance times ...

Victorian England, when the sun never set on the empire.

I would say whatever mine is but my multi-ethnic arse identifies where I'm from not where my ancestors are from.

I just don't see the clear parallel between the USA and Rome.
Its a new republican talking point they think makes them look smart...when it actually does the opposite.
To the OP:
Rome- they knew how to do it right but the biggest strength was keeping the good and tossing the bad with regard to conquered people and lands.
Favorite to read about would be Egyptian.

The Spanish empire was bigger, for a while!

The ROMAN achievements have not been reached yet, they were the greatest for the longest, hail Rome!

But those Germanic guys touched heaven for a brief momment, the highest of highs were reached and left an incredible and unforgettable mark in our souls, may their glory be remembered for ever!
You know them, the "evil" ones.

I'm partial to the Tarahumara, a native tribe of reclusive super runners that still live in the deserts of Northwestern Mexico.

Another great Civ IV choice.

Romans, they had so many advancements and they advanced civilization so far and fast. My favorite part of their history is reading about the military conquests and defeats. While made for TV the new History channel show 'Barbarians Rising' has done a great job of presenting some Barbarians who won major battles against Rome.
The Chinese are another I just started studying. There is so much and they were great at recording history so you can go so far back. There were so many dynasties and kingdoms it's amazing to follow them all. Then the conquests of the Mongolian hoardes were very swift and well recorded in history. While not the greatest civilization, they let you believe in any God and live how you wanted as long as you paid taxes and swore fealty to the Khan. (those who opposed where wiped out, entire cities were razed and the fields salted after defying the Khans)

The Phoenicians. Developed the alphabet and mastered trade. A great people that was the first to unite the world through peaceful trade rather than war. While many may not agree with democracy, our society at large is based on the Phoenicians that were able to show this.

Carthaginians pique my interest. Very strategically spread out, coastal trading group from Phoenicia.
Hannibal trying to take Rome from the north with no ability to re-supply and reinforce. Sort of reminds of Napoleon. Did well with fewer troops but gave us the "Pyrrhic victory".
see also, artists rendition of Hannibal's elephants crossing the Alps.

The Mayans. Lived for thousands of years in South America, built thousands of precisely engineered cities, temples, and observatories, conquered massive amounts of territory, traded all the way up to North America, had an elaborate government consisting of city-states, developed reading/writing, astronomy, mathematics, etc.
And then, one day- they up and left every bit of it behind, moved to the Yucatan peninsula in southern Mexico, and started rebuilding from scratch. Why? No one knows.
The only way we would know is from their manuscripts, which were almost entirely destroyed by the Spanish priests (heathen teachings). Because of the Spanish we lost history that dates back for many millenia.
