So did the USGA basically say their Open Champ is a liar??

DJ says he did not touch the ball. The replay does not show that he did (IMO replays more back up DJs claim) yet the USGA assesses the penalty because a reasonable assumption that he did.

The USGA just looks like a bunch of elitist dicks with this ruling. Plus, why the frick would it take to the end of the round.

If he touched it or caused it to move, why did it roll backwards?

USGA didnt want a cokehead to win

Grounding his putter behind the ball could've made it move backward; however the replays clearly show that didn't happen.

I'll never understand the logic behind that ruling.. The ball went backwards and unless it was magnetized to his putter it wouldn't have done that while not even grounded.. They really deserve tremendous amounts of scorn for the ruling and their handling of the matter..

The little smug rules official was just on the Golf Channel. The ex pro analyst kept asking the rules geek if he had ever seen a ball move after a player took s practice stroke next to it. He would never answer the question. I swear the pro on the set was about to punch the rules guy in the face.

The USGA lucked out today because DJ and Cavs won.
They are the true losers of the day.

frick them that was bullshite the way they handled that

I always thought that this ruling would come down to what the player says. it didn't seem like there was conclusive evidence to rule against him on this one, especially since he said he didn't cause the ball to move.

I think they made the ruling because of the last birdie makes it irrelevant. If it would have resulted in a playoff I don't believe they make the ruling that they did
The USGA loves their petty "integrity of the game" stance

They only added the penalty because he won by multiple strokes.
That sit down with the rules guy was an absolute disaster for the PGA and Fox.

The Bear, Rory, Jordan, Ricky,etc..all letting them rightfully have it.
ETA. There was a great piece recently about the ball needing to be changed due to today's clubs balls and golfer conditioning. It specifically mentions DJ's ability to go 600+ yards in two swings, and amongst even smaller guys like Rory doing the same on the regular, and/or just going over tall trees without needing to use hook, draw, or punch shots, making a mockery of Par 5s. Thus, also wonder if the USGA weren't sorta "sitting out Draymond for Gm 5" with that non-ruling or ruling hanging in limbo down the stretch..
Just shitty to have been slow/indecisive on the ruling..makes USGA look hokey..and getting it possibly wrong to boot even with video?

If they truly care about the integrity of the game they would have taken DJ at his word.
Such a cluster frick of a decision. I really wish it would have blown up in their faces even more.

Completely agree with this. It's always been up to the player to call it on themselves, like Shane Lowry did in round 2. I think this sets a precedent and gives a lot of power to the rules officials. I've never seen a penalty enforced like that.

This told me all I needed to know. When all these guys started to speak up about what a clusterfrick this was, it pretty much proved it in my mind.

The crap part is that this will get a pass since It happened the same night at the NBA finals.

DJ brought the rules official in at the time it happened. After discussing it the official ruled no penalty. That should have been the end of it. To tell him on the 12th tee you may or may not get a penalty had to frick his head up; he did hit some poor shots the next few holes before regrouping. If the penalty isn't assessed at the time, it should be over and done. USGA shite the bed big time and lost a lot of credibility. I doubt they call the penalty if he ended up leading by 1 shot.
