I really have no issue with people setting up GoFundMe pages for stuff like this. This is what they should be used for imo.
I agree, but at the same time, even something as high as $10,000 is a high out of pocket deductible for someone with health insurance. My wife had a very complicated pregnancy that was followed by 5 weeks in the NICU for our daughter, and even though we were "billed" for over $900k, we were only on the hook for our deductible and co-insurance of $10,000.
Without insurance it could be a huge liability for this person, but hopefully he has coverage and the GoFundMe is used for whatever his out of pocket cost may be. I don't mean to sound like a dick whatsoever, but with insurance it is hard to see expenses of $25,000 (the goal of the account). I wish these things were more specific to the actual costs and not to the "family and whatever they need."

I hope all of the gerbals made it out alive.

That's my only issue with the these pages when used correctly, the vagueness.
But I can't really expect the family to be particularly detailed setting this up in 30 minutes after a traumatic event so you just have to trust it goes to what is needed and feel good about yourself either way.

Even if the guy does have health insurance.....if he is/was in a coma, that means ICU care. That's $$$$ every day he remains in the ICU. Not to mention any surgeries he likely has had. Health insurance doesn't always cover that 100% so he still will receive bills to pay.
I'm guessing his medical bills are already north of 100k.

That's great that you've pleased yourself but that's not the purpose of the page.

Yeah that was my main point too. They had the GoFundMe for the girl that was sent to that "Christian" camp in Texas because she was lesbian, and it was designed to cover legal fees to fight for her release. The girl ended up being released within a day or two when the story blew up and all the donations went to the attorney fees (who didn't file anything to get her out) and then to the girl herself for whatever she may need once she graduated high school. That kind of thing is how a good cause can turn sour. I wish there was some sort of way to refund donations if they're not needed, sort of like a failed Kickstarter campaign.

It isn't out of the question the government may pay for it.
I believe it happened after the church shooting.

Yeah, but if he has even decent insurance he won't be paying more than $5-$10k. Even an Obamacare plan has a maximum out of pocket limit for a family plan of $13,200.

I also have no problem for the family being able to use some of that money to reimburse airline tickets (that had to be bought out of the blue just to try and find Leonel), hotel, and and sustinence costs that may have accrued. I'm not sure if that is already covered by another organization. I'm also not opposed to any money left over being put in a trust fund for his daughter.

Me neither, if that's what you're giving for. That's kind of the point of charity. To give, and hope it helps.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it said he suffered a gunshot to the back of the head. So who knows the severity of the head injury this guy could have. He could make a full recovery, or need extensive medical rehab to regain basic functions.
He could need special medical equipment at home once he's well enough to be released from the hospital. Equipment not always covered by insurance.

Ya that's where the real frickery begins. Lose job, no income, etc.
Reminder for people to look into disability insurance if you don't have it.

I would support this more if there was a cap on out of pocket expenses/deductibles. If his out of pocket max was 8k, plus 5k for visiting family, etc, I would be more likely to donate.

Look up corporate angels for the air fair. Great program and might save you some $.

It's should be fairly obvious to anyone that puts honest thought into this that there are a tremendous amount of possible long term, very expensive consequences that could result from his type of injury.

Yeah exactly. I don't expect a line-item budget for the donations, but in a perfect world I wish there was more specifics about how something would be used once the primary purpose is funded. I'll say this, a $25k goal for something like this is reasonable. What chaps my arse is the people that put goals of $100k when they're already insured. They're effectively raising money for pain and suffering, and while I'm sure that is the case sometimes, the lack of transparency/accountability discourages me from donating.

I can see your point of view there for sure.

Yeah my daughter has been battling Cancer I've got health insurance as well as supplemental cancer insurance. shite has still cost me a lot of money! In saying that though I wouldn't start a go fund me page.
I pray your daughter makes a full recovery. It sucks she has an attention-whore, a-hole for a father though.

I am the stepson mentioned by the OP and I am with them in Orlando and the money is being raised strictly for his medical bills rehabilitation and physical therapy. Any left over money will be used for his daughter. Things are difficult right now and there are a lot of unknowns. We have as many questions about the situation as everyone else outside of the loop does.
