Sorry, it was the chick. She has the force but was never trained in it and defeats kylo.
But this is clearly explained if you watch the movie. "The chic" was the awakening of the force from which the movie is named. She was created to bring things back into balance. Until we find out her origin we really have to suspend judgement about her being "just some chic". Also, they demonstrated Kylo is very powerful but not very in control which is what a lightsaber battle is all about.

How many lens flares were in "The Force Awakens"?
The point is that it was formulaic, and really really corny at times.
He's right about the villain as well. At no time did I think it was going to be difficult or impossible for this ugly little wiener to be defeated by the good guys. He doesn't have to be a carbon copy of Vader (although they tried hard to make him one) but he does have to be menacing and make the audience believe that he's a formidable enemy. He doesn't. He can still be conflicted, etc. without being a little pussy.
And really, if you have to talk yourself and others into thinking he's a great villain, he's not a good villain.

No he does not.

Yes he does. Otherwise, you get a shitty villain, which he is.

And don't expect anything different for future films. This was always my concern with Disney taking over Star Wars.

I enjoyed it for what it is, but it definitely isn't a very interesting movie. It is the epitome of crafted, bland blockbuster designed with little in mind other than mass appeal. Because of name recognition all they had to do is not screw it up and make total crap, and they accomplished that at least.

Yeah - my 12 year old niece told me after the movie - "It was good I guess, I just wish they had done something new instead of all the same old stuff". Yep, the epitome of mediocrity; but still an improvement.

Also Kylo had just been hit by Chewy's crossbow blaster which earlier in the movie sent two First Order troopers flying back several feet when they were hit implying that the blaster is very powerfull. Yet Kylo just staggered some when he took a direct hit from Chewy. Point being he was weakened.

If A New Hope had never happened and it was released for the first time in 2016 the movie would be ripped to shreds and Empire would never even get made.

When is being in your 30s considered a teenager?

I can't remember much about it.
That is how much it moved me.
will have to watch it again to know what's going on in the next one

The dialogue in Star Wars has never been strong. It's got some quotable lines, especially the Jedi stuff, but it's always been about the unique world/universe. Honestly it's hard to put a finger on what differentiated it and why it became as popular as it did.
I've always attributed a lot of it to the recent Apollo missions and moon landings that imbedded space exploration into the public conciousness, which carried on through the generations and reached a point to where it became a pop-culture phenomenon; basically it was one of the first blockbusters released at the perfect time. Now the original trilogy (especially 4 and 5) is almost sacred to its fans and beyond criticism, no matter their flaws.

I agree with about everything you said. I'm an original trilogy nut and I certainly didn't hate the movie, but was very underwhelmed by it.
I literally said out loud in the theater "another Death Star?". And my daughter and I both lol'd when Kylo took his helmet off. And you're right about Carrie Fisher being difficult to look at.
TFA was not a disappointment, but I was underwhelmed.

It's funny that this, a black guy and a female lead are among the biggest complaints for this movie. That's reaching.

Weak or not, Kylo was supposed to be a full fledged force user, a knight. He passed his trials before he overthrew Skywalker and ran him off. If he defeated or scared Skywalker that bad (the most powerful Jedi ever), how can he lose to these people in a straight up fight? I get that she has powers. But they are unfocused and she wouldn't know how to use them. Especially since she just figured out that she had them pretty recently. It was a strange ending and I just don't get where they are going with it. If it follows the same pattern as the originals (which it probably will), Kylo is supposed to be a supreme badass. That is going to be hard to pull off..

I couldn't beat Bruce Lee in a straight up fight ever.
But if he had just murdered his own dad, and been shot in the chest with a shotgun, and I had plenty of prior martial arts training and I was fighting for my life and had a magical force behind be and was descended from a line of genetically gifted fighters, I might stand a chance.

I mean that was the point. To show how immature he is. He's powerful as frick, but he's a crybaby with a short temper. That's what they went for.
