Is it a stand alone app?

Since Android and Apple together make up 99% of the smart phone market I would assume most people go with whatever is the default app that comes on the phone. Are that many people ditching the default sms app and installing that instead?

Seems a bit of a reach.

It was built into the Facebook app, then Facebook broke it out as a stand alone app. They caught some flack for breaking it out, but I think it got many of the users to migrate. Don't forget they own WhatsApp too.

Crazy. Just looked, WhatsApp downloaded over a billion times too.

I know zero people that use either. I used WhatsApp several years back, but not recently. Guess I'm getting old.

I use it every day without FBM. I run two pages (my personal one and one for an organization I belong to) and I'm also looking to start one for a business within the next 60-90 days.

For personal, organizational and business, they're fantastic ways to get information out, keep up with family & friends, or promote your business.

All done without FB Messenger. You can message till your heart's content with the FB web-app but not with the actual FB app for iOS. They separated messaging to FBM obviously.

In other words: You're completely wrong. But you have zero experience with either FB in the medium term, or FBM at all. I have downloaded it and used it but its really not useful for me and what I do. But I'm not here to say, "Well I don't use it so it must suck argh blah argh blah."

but whatever makes gfunk feel better about his numbers..

Why would I feel anything about those numbers, and why are they mine? I surely didn't make them up and I surely don't give a red-rat's behind about FBM since-as I stated-I don't use it.

But using anecdotal, experiential evidence to back up an opinion-and then scoffing when someone shows you evidence that you're completely off base-is not something foreign to TD.com. Surprised you'd subscribe to it though.

It's REALLY popular internationally. I use it to talk with friends that live abroad and people I do business with in China. There isn't one person I talk to domestically using it.

Seriously? Who shares video this way anymore? Android automatically syncs every video you make on your device with a private YouTube-ish link on gdrive and it's free and unlimited and it takes 2 seconds to click share URL and whoever clicks that link gets the highest quality video their current bandwidth allows.

How is this done? I don't see that.

you can pull up your video in google photos, hit the share button, click create link, then choose what app (gmail, groupme, hangouts, textra, etc) you want to send it with.

CAD this is an area where your service provider and/or your own habits may leave you in a blind spot.

quote:

WhatsApp Messenger is a proprietary cross-platform, encrypted, instant messaging client for smartphones. It uses the Internet to send text messages, documents, images, video, user location and audio messages to other users using standard cellular mobile numbers. As of February 2016, WhatsApp had a user base of one billion, making it the most popular messaging application.

Also, it appears Mark Zuckerberg and FB thought it was worth it to buy Whatsapp. For just over $19 billion dollars.

But hey, whatever numbers make you feel better, CAD

yep. i just generate a link then text that out.

google video/photos hosting == youtube essentially. you used to be able to 'move' your videos over to your youtube account and there's some advantage still (shaking correction, etc) and i guess if you're using youtube to generate ad revenue you'd want to move it over there but since i'm just sharing with family and friends (and not you SOBs) the 'generate URL' has always worked perfectly.

i take it one step further and my wife and i share an album with my mom that is just photos & video of my 1yo and anytime either of us take a new video on our phones, we just tag it to that album and anytime my mom goes in, she sees any new video or photo without us having to even text or email her a new link.

in fact, my wife uses an iphone but i have 'google photos' installed on it so it backs up her iphone photos & video to her gdrive account.

all free and my mom just casts the videos to her chromecast.

indeed for big events with multiple pictures creating a folder on google drive and sharing that folder with applicable people is so easy.

but like you i also have some family folders that i update occasionally and there is no need to reshare or resend out links each time. It works great.

technically i said "youtube-ish"

but yes, essentially its a private youtube service pared down & running in the background. just doesn't have all the bells & whistles.

honestly i dont care. i *know* there are other things out there which are popular i've never used (periscope thingie, etc) and i've heard the term 'whatsapp' before but yes, in my personal 'blind spot' i've never ever had a reason to use something like that.

again, i dont even go crazy skinning my phone anymore. i like the vanilla android experience and lost the energy to flash ROMs years ago..i was one of the FIRST XDA members and used that site years ago to 'skin' my Tmobile SDA phone with the iphone v1.0 skin the day Jobs' debuted it which pissed off my apple co-workers tremendously

they all came in to my office (knowing i was a huge windows mobile user) to rub the new iphone in my face..even though it wasnt going to ship for 8 months..and i whipped out the "iphone skin" on my SDA

took that smug smile right off their face.

less is more(tm)

i used to put objectdock and all that shite on my PC to make it 'look better than windows xp'.

and it did.

for awhile.

then shite got weird.

and it got slow.

and more shite got wierd.

i finally learned to uninstall all that shite and leave the OS alone.

of course when it came to my phone i failed to learn that lesson and did the same thing.

but but but..LOOK AT MY frickING HOMESCREEN!! Did you see that 'black' skin i'm using? its HOT.

again with battery drains, crashing apps and generally a fricked up phone experience.

now i fully embrace a rooted google vanilla android with default apps although i used to use textra back in the day.
