Madison County MS - Man and Two Children Killed in Collision With Train

A sad story that also makes me angry as heck. I seriously don't understand people who don't exercise extra caution with their kids in the vehicle. I mean if you want to be stupid by yourself, that's one thing, but if you have your kids with you, slow down and be careful. I can't imagine what the mother/wife must be going through this morning.
Bottom line, slow down.

quote:
The Kearney Park fire chief said the man just picked up his two children from day care. They were headed home when the truck crossed the tracks, authorities said.
"I just started hollering, 'Train, train, train ... no, no no, no.' All of a sudden he just, the train just struck, and it just (dragged) him on down the road," witness Deborah Armstrong said. "When my sister ran down, you know, the truck was in front of the train. I started calling 911. I couldn't hardly talk to them because I was just so messed up, so hysterical about what had gone on."
The truck was wedged under the train and was split in two. The Kearney Park fire chief said the 35-year-old man and his two children died on impact. Authorities said the 7-year-old and his father were wearing seat belts and a 1-year-old child was in a car seat at the time of the crash.

How the frick does that even happen
Posted on 5/19/16 at 8:15 am to DingLeeBerry
i never understood how people can get hit by a train unless they want to

Damn, that's a rough read

My Dad worked for the railroad for 40+ years and had to go out to scenes like this. He would get so pissed because he said 99% of the time it was someone who didn't pay attention to the lights, tried to drive around the gates because they didn't want to wait for the train, or simply wanted to outrun the train. He could only think of twice that there was actual mechanical failure to the crossing lights/gate.

I interact with train crews quite a bit for work. I think a lot of people would be surprised if they actually knew how many collisions and near misses happen on a regular basis.
One of the guys was telling me that he hates the LP fair because it seems like every time they come up on the fairgrounds there are cars hanging out on the tracks waiting to get in or out... and you know damn near every one of those cars has kids in it.

I was riding on a commuter train when an old man walked in front of the train at Germantown, MD and was hit and killed....like terd said, it's a lot more common than people think

Don't know the particulars here but it highlights one of the issues with our track crossings, particularly in rural areas. I have been in several places in north Louisiana where the tracks are run in the middle of a wooded area without crossing rails and minimal signage. The opening in the trees before the tracks doesn't allow for more than a second or two to decide if a train is headed your way and in one spot I've been, there is a bend in the tracks that blocks the view less than 100 yards from the crossing. It is easy to be on the tracks before you realize it if you are distracted. If you drive a roadway everyday that rarely has trains, it's easy to become complacent. Sad story.

Within Municipal areas, that is almost certainly the case. However, there are a large number of crossings in rural Louisiana that do not have gates and occasionally not lights. Often these are spurs that go to loading facilities for petroleum products, chemicals, or lumber.
A friend from high school was killed on by a train when his truck stalled on the tracks, unfortunately, I think he had been drinking. He was trying to restart the truck when it happened. There was no gate where he was but that was back in the early eighties near Duson, La

I've waited at my fair share of railroad crossings and I don't think I've ever had the thought in my head where you say, "frick this, I'm driving around the gates," or "frick it, I'm going to beat this son of a bitch".

No shite, it's never crossed my mind.
Were there rails or lights at the crossing?

I don't know where this happened but lots of RR crossings here don't have gates or lights. If you're not paying attention you could cross a RR track and not realize it until you feel the bumps.

On Supertalk this morning en route to work, the interview seemed to imply that this statement had some truth.

And, yet, the railroad will get sued, and some dumb fricking jury will give them money.
