Any thoughts on Tom Petty's place in music?

Honestly he's my favorite artist just because his music has never been pretentious and I just like the down to earth sound of it. Am I weird? What's the general consensus on Tom Petty from "real music" fans?

He is totally legitimate. Fantastic songwriter, unique voice. I'll listen to his solo or Heartbreakers stuff pretty much anytime.

I feel he's like Bruce Springsteen with a southern feel to it. That's not a knock on anyone because I love the Boss' music but in terms of sound it definitely aligns. Really the only thing next to that southern "touch" that differentiates him from Bruce is he didn't play lead on the recordings but rhythm. Love his vocals.

Unique band, really stripped down rock band in a time when synthesizers became cool. Damn The Torpedoes is one of my top ten albums of all time. A blue collar band without resorting to patronizing.

Petty is a terrific songwriter and a unique singer.
He and the Heartbreakers are just a great rock 'n roll band. Always have been.

He's one of the GOAT. Put his first album out 40 years ago. That's legendary status.

great, simple, easy listening music

has never been pretentious
Stripped down, middle of the road "mainstream" rock with some pop sensibilities. Gainesville produced a lot of great musicians from that period - Stephen Stills, Don Felder, Bernie Leadon, Petty, among others.
Although he kind of "up" produced a little more in the 80s, Petty never went for the over-the-top orchestrations or deviated too far from his core sound. Solid songs, solid band. One of the few groups of "ugly" cats that made the transition to the video era.
Video indeed killed most of the radio stars, but not the Heartbreakers.

fricking love Tom Petty. His "place in music" is cemented in greatness imo.

I'll never forgive him for singing a duet with that billy goat. What was its name...Stevie something...

Absolutely legit. I don't love his voice, but he is an outstanding songwriter.

Love his music. No matter the song I feel like it was written in the last year. So many great songs. Just a great songwriter and musician.

He may not be in a class by himself, but whatever class he's in, it wouldn't take long to take the roll.
