I prefer the human error. It changes the way many pitchers attack the zone, depending on who is behind the plate at times.
If you set an exact strike zone it would make the pitchers' job much more difficult.
This. The pitcher/catcher and catcher/umpire relationship is a dynamic one and affects how a game is pitched and caught. Having that personality behind the plate adds to the game too. It would make a game seem more like watching someone play a video game.

I just hate the delays in games. Im ok with the human imperfection. The Cards had lost a WS because of a blown call that would have been easily overturned via replay...and that is something I accept.
I dont think any of the leagues have gotten the "replay" implementation more wrong than the NHL.
Just get rid of it or at least minimize its role but please dont expand.

if Joey Crawford was a baseball ump instead

I'd stop watching. It would kill the game. The human element plays a huge roll in how a pitcher attacks the zone.

Every batter is different, so there's still a human element.

This was tried once a Kong time ago, back when Ron Luciano was an ump. It was some kind of radar system the home plate ump adjusted to the batter's height. It worked by setting off a red light if any object entered the strike some. Problem was all the false positives.

i don't know if it would work or not, and i understand the desire for the dynamics of the umpire/batter/pitcher interaction ... however, it's damned silly the way umps call strikes ... a strike is a strike ... the atlanta braves pitchers of the 80s/90s made a living off of "strikes" that were just off the corner (except for smoltz) ... the strike zone shouldn't be so interpreted as it is now ...

I really don't see how anyone could possibly say no. You're essentially saying that you are ok with getting fricked by an umpire.

Exactly.

It would ruin the game.
Umps, even bad umpiring are a huge part of the game.

If the technology is able, I am all for it.

I wish you hadn't started the thread because that probably kills the possibility of it getting a fair hearing.
Electronically called balls and strikes would be a revolutionary improvement for baseball. No more variable calls by individual umpires, for some hitters, for some pitchers, for some situations, affected by the last judgement call, yada yada.
It would drastically improve the integrity of the game and improve the quality and speed of the game.

For the wrong reasons. You can still have an umpire there to call plays at the plate.

Why? In just about any sport you have to adjust for how the game is officiated. It's part of sports.
