No it is an extension. It will not change our cap till next year.
If it hit this year we wouldn't be able to sign our rookie class.

quote:I would not say it is a bargain. He is now the 3rd highest paid LT in the NFL. Playing devil's advocate, this is for a guy who has not yet been selected to a Pro Bowl or All Pro and has missed 5 games due to injury in his 2 years as a starter. I think it is a fair deal based on his age and potential to be one of the best LTs in the game. However, the Saints have taken some risk as well in the deal and shown a lot of faith in him. I think it fair for both sides, but would not call it a bargain.
12.9 over 5 years...that is a nice bargain for a guy who would be commanding 16-17 million next offseason.

my only issue with the galette deal was that you gave him that money knowing he was a shithead
Posted on 5/4/16 at 9:02 am to Tigeralltheway
At best we could lower it by maybe a couple of tens of thousands (depends on his base) but not enough to worry about doing it. His base is either at or very near the minimum. The rest is guaranteed money that can't be shifted.

I understand your playing devil's advocate but the probowl to me stopped being a metric to measure success a while ago.
Drew not getting selected last year after everything he did was incredible.
Colston going his whole Career, Lewis' 2013 season...etc
Saints only get reps if they are a top team.
Armstead has been a Top 5 Tackle the past 2 years and has the potential to be the best.
If this years FA market taught us anything in 2 years down the road which is where I am projecting this deal...we would have gotten away with robbery.
People hated Drew's deal in 2012...fast forward to last year and it was one of the best deals in the NFL.

agree that it is no bargain but I feel great about investing in him. He is dominant and still improving. Good dude and character from all I have ever read.
Armstead and Graham were both grand slam swinging for the fences on upside potential picks. The FO has earned enough cred from me to wait 'n see for picks like Onyemata before criticizing.
In my estimation, small school talents are improving each year (see Wentz). Glad the Saints are among the leaders in mining talent away from the big school beaten path.

It is very much a bargain what you aren't looking at is that only 25 million of it is fully guaranteed and 35 is guaranteed with an injury. When you look at NFL contracts the guaranteed number is the only thing that matters. So the risk really isn't that high. This is a great deal for the saints.

IMO anytime you lock up an elite/premiere player for less than the new top dollar for that position to a multi year deal in their prime...it is a bargain. 15% off is a sale.
Look at what Suh, Mario Williams, and Von Miller did to their drafting franchises. Demanded every ounce of money you can pay them(Von) or they bounce for new record deals(Mario and Suh).
Between the draft and FA it is hard enough to find and get that kind of talent in the building the first time...then you turn around and have to really PAY or try replace that caliber of player.(still trying to replace Nicks after 4 years)
He is a projected top 3 earning tackle next year (more people can still sign before then)
by year 3/5 he may not even be top 8 in earnings
by year 5 he may not be top 12 in earnings
We have also already been fortunate enough to get to pay him practically nothing his first 4 years(while sloshing through cap hell) even though he has been a high end starter for over 3 of those years.

he'll be 30 turning 31 when this contract expires seeking another deal.

He's worth that money. I think he would get more on the open market for sure. He's a soldier on the field. Losing him would be horrible for us.

That makes him the third highest paid LT (on a per year basis). Hardly stole.
Usually when guys like this hit the open market they get the #1 contract at their position at the time because of the increase of the salary cap. It's a really good deal.

tyron's smith's deal like 2 years ago was considered a bargain and that was 2 year ago cap numbers, this is marginally more and a dang near equal talent. we'll end up getting 9 years of stellar LT play for great value.
Posted on 5/4/16 at 10:16 am to NOSHAU
We are coming out of salary cap hell, it was important to us to resign him before he bacomes a free agent. He's an elite LT, something we haven't had in a while. We have been fortunate to have elite caliber guards for most of the Brees era and have drafted well at LT, but haven't had to invest a ton of salary cap into the position since we were paying interior guys. Having a stud protecting the blind side is key, especially now that we have uncertainty at the guard position. Great move, I'm not concerned about the $ here at all, to keep him we had to pay him well, and he has earned his payday. Congrats to Armstead and the Saints on the move

Right but that's why I later added he's only 3rd by 300k per. It's a small gap.
But I also said it's a great contract for a great player.
He may have gotten a little more next year (tag was going to be about $14 mil) but it is not some great bargain.
We got him for slightly under market value. Great for us yes, but not a steal.

get back to me in 2018 and see what premier LT's are being signed for.

He wasn't getting a new contract in 2018 (he wasn't going to stay on the tag). Plus the price then may be about $15 mil per.
Like a said great deal, not a steal. A steal would have been $10-11 mil per.

says who? he played out this year, saints ARE tagging him for 2017, he'd have to play that year out and that would be the comps he would be gauging his value that year to determine his market value. That's exactly what you have to compare this deal to to truly understand that value of.
Posted on 5/4/16 at 11:05 am to Chad504boy
He wasn't going to play on the tag. We don't leave guys on the tag (I'm trying to recall anytime under Loomis we have done that).
He would have been tagged but eventually would work out a long term deal next year. At most it would have been around $14 mil per. Saving $1 mil per year on a big contract is a bargain, not a steal.
Like I said, great contract. Got a bargain. Not a steal.
