My wife's side of the family had a big get together yesterday and some of her relatives, let's say ages 20-30, had a huge debate about this. There were some that felt it's an insult to compare the MCU to the LOTR fims, while the other side said the LOTR is freaking boring and and nowhere near as entertaining as some of the MCU films. Now, let me make it clear that they were discussing films like Cap 2, TA, and GOTG, not really any of the other ones (Thor movies were never mentioned )

I think it's a fair discussion to have, both are wildly successful blockbusters and have developed huge followings. Which one do you prefer more?

LOTR. The MCU is good but not great. LOTR is amazing. It's a shame they didn't handle The Hobbit with as much care.

MCU by virtue of not giving one iota of a care about the Lord of the Rings movies.

Also MCU is pretty good.

LOTR by far. I eagerly await the day Christopher Tolkien dies so we can get more movies.

That's hard to compare. LOTR is 3 part cinematic masterpiece of a book series.
MCU is an ever expanding universe with decades of stories to base its films on. They are meant to be fun blockbuster films, not oscar worthy material.

I love both sets of films but it's apples to oranges. LOTR are the better overall films, some of my favorite ever really, but I like that MCU just keeps getting further into that world and has several great films of its own.

This is a non debate. LOTR is relatively modern classic, epic literature. MCU is fun, but it is comic book genre. Both movie adaptation sets are highly entertaining.

LOTR and it is not close, and I love the Marvel movies by the way.

LOTR Trilogy is a masterpiece.

MCU is a fun comic book romp.

LOTR had a better story. Deeper characters. MCU is fun but it's the same thing over and over.
