Tracy Dove assumed the worst after her 1-year-old dog named Charlie disappeared in 2006. Days without the animal turned into years, and Dove figured the brown-and-white pointer was dead.
Then, last week, Dove's phone rang: Charlie had been found alive near the south Alabama town of Brewton. A veterinary clinic tracked her down using a microchip that Dove had implanted in the dog when it was young.
"I was shocked, overwhelmed. I cried," Dove said in an interview Thursday. "It's amazing."
No one knows where the dog has been for the last decade, but Charlie has a gray muzzle now and a cancerous tumor in his chest. Charlie will undergo surgery at a veterinary clinic in Mobile as soon as next week, and Dove plans to bring him home as soon as possible afterward.

Someone else will be very upset and missing dog posters of their beloved pet who has been in the family for 10 years now will start to pop up

No, this is Alabama. They stole the dog and abandoned it when it got cancer.

So it had a microchip but the owner didn't bother using it after 10 years?

Huh? The microchip only carries the info of the owner. A vet has to scan it to find the info. It's not a gps chip

That dogs probably got a hell of a story to tell

At least they didn't take it to the park and burn it like in LA.
See how this works.

You should just ask for another user name, or just never post again.

Isn't finding a long lost dog cause for a state holiday in Alabama?

Dog stayed with them for 1/10 of its life. It probably doesn't even remember the original owners.

There was a similar story featured on dateline or something and I believe a legal battle ensued between the original owners and the family that found and raised the dog for years

This story is great and heartbreaking at the same time. I hope the dog beats cancer. frick cancer.

If someone finds a lost dog (or any lost moveable) in Louisiana as long as they make a genuine effort to find the original owner (usually requires putting an ad in the paper and maybe putting up flyers near where it was found), it belongs to the finder of the dog in 3 years. (Semi-occupancy)
If they don't do that, they own it in 10 years by bad faith aquisitive perscription of a moveable.
If the dog was abandoned or was a wild stray that never had an owner, the moment a family decides to take in the dog, it's theirs based on the principle of occupancy.

Very cool story. As a teenager, we had a dog once that escaped on New Years Eve and must have kept running from fireworks. Lived Uptown NOLA. Someone said he saw the dog close somewhere downtown, but could not catch her. downtown. About a year later, it returned in the middle of the night. It was pretty cool. I can't even imagine having one found after ten years.

My head hurts after reading this.
Otherwise, glad to see this guy will be reunited with a friend!
