I've got a guy who's asked me to give his kids some private lessons for bseball, he wants me to help his batting and pitching. He's pitched last year for the first time, so mostly I'm just cleaning up mechanics, but what I was wondering was is he too young for me to teach him how to throw a breaking ball. I've taught him to throw a circle change along with 4 seam and 2 seam fastball. Should he stick with that or should I teach him to throw the hook? If it was my kid I wouldn't but his dad has asked me a couple times if I'm gonna teach him any other pitches so I get the feeling he's wanting me to. The kid is 10 will be 11 in june.

Kid's gotta go 18 innings in a weekend to win that travel baseball national championship ring.

What's his curve look like?
Posted on 4/21/16 at 9:50 am to cincyykid
he'll never be ready in time

Too young.. Mechanics and maturity have to be perfect to even sniff a curve at 11-12 and should probably wait until 13-14.. Kids dont need a curve at that age anyway, changing speeds and working the plate are much more important and it builds a solid foundation for the kids progression

DON'T TEACH HIM THE CURVE!!!

I've always heard don't throw curveballs until 12. Of course everyone matures differently so that would just be a guide I suppose.

You can't be serious, right?

Here's my feedback:
Parents need to stop taking youth sports so seriously and let their kids have fun.

Cut Fastball.....FTW
Down and away action, much less stress on the elbow

IMO,kids this age shouldn't be throwing knuckle balls and curves. I think off speed stuff like a simple sinker and slider is fine from my experience.

This is entirely too young to teach a kid to throw a curve ball. Teach him a cutter. I've been to multiple medical conventions about sports injuries where Dr. Andrews was the guest speaker. His opinion is they should AT LEAST be 14 before they start attempting curve balls but 16 would be better. It's a lot of strain on the ligaments and tendons in the elbow and it's better to have them as developed as possible before exposing them to so much torque.

Should be all he needs.

Changing speeds is better than being able to throw a curve IMO. Better for his arm and can use the same throwing motion every pitch. No curves til 14-15

If he already can't throw a breaking ball he won't go to the majors.

Teach him how to throw the nasty

If he locates a fastball and has decent change of speed on the change then there shouldn't be a reason to at this point. If you have potential you'll strike 11 year olds out with those two pitches alone.
If he were to throw a curve obviously it wouldn't be good for his developing arm and he probably wouldn't throw it well anyway. Also, check his paws, if they aren't big enough change positions now. No reason to chase a pitching career

Absolutely too young. Go read some of the articles written by Dr James Andrews. There's a reason you're seeing a shitload of college players and players in their first 5 years in the majors having Tommy John surgery. Too much, too young.
