I get it. I just cannot get on board with the our window is over mentality. It doesn't make sense imo.
Call me a homer, but Brees just played one of the best seasons of his career. Father Time will eventually win, but he's still a top five QB and he can be that for another two years.
Maybe two years is not enough to build the team around him, and I can understand that opinion. but two of our best years in the Payton era came on quick turnaround. Awful, awful D in 08 to 2009. Bad team in 12 to 2013.
This offense is still very, very good. Another 10 sack guy or impact DT. Just a big hit at pick 12 for our D plus Keenan healthy, and this is a playoff team.
Enter the 2017 offseason with a solid team and a wad to blow...there can be a final push...and there should be.
The window might be closed forever once Brees is gone anyway (exaggerating). Elite QBs win, and we may searching for one for a long, long time, regardless of the strategy for it. Let's give it one last push for one of the best to play the game. Let's TRY to make a few gem draft picks that give us one last chance to make a run.

There are no guarantees. But we gotta try.
I'm not gonna pretend to know who will have the most impact in this rookie class.
There will be guys that everyone loves that suck and vice versa. Stars that went too late, etc. I don't know the answer to that, but I hope the Saints room does

I hate to think that the "Brees-era" is over as well, it sucks honestly as Aug said he's one of my favorite players of all time. And everything you said is fair. I just tend to lean the other way No way to know who's right as we're talking about distant future events.
However I will say we're in a special situation. One of our biggest needs on defense is arguably the deepest position in this draft, and one of the deepest that specific position has been in years (DT). Also Lynch is a prospect with all the physical tools, but has widely been regarded as a guy who needs to be eased in to reach his full potential, which is high (which we have the ability to provide).
If we were take Lynch as Brees' heir apparent, and a very good DT in round 2. Follow that with an OG or S in 3+ range, I would consider that a very solid draft and could understand it.

Saints have ability to put out a good ground game, need to upgrade Guard a bit, get defense better and more opportunistic and really we have just as good of shot as most. Throw in health luck and you never know.
Oh no doubt. Crazy things happen in the nfl quickly. I'm just saying if Payton and Co do for some reason grab one of the top qbs and feel legitimately good about him it won't be that crazy to me. None of us really know what Brees wants money wise or years wise and if you think you're getting one of the better qbs in the league (in the future) it obviously makes sense.

I wouldn't be opposed to drafting him. Guy is gonna be legit.

He does not look like a franchise QB to me. Looks like a JP Losman type personality

worth reading thread! good discussion
It's all about value to me. Not my values but the Saints Big Board. If they rate Lynch high enough I will back the decision. Better to hope than message board whining. I try to wait at least 3 years before criticizing a pick. There might be as many guys that surprise me to the upside as disappoint.
Me as GM I would wait. The NFL has become much more of a year to year proposition. In that regard, I do not see the SB window closed. A couple of picks that can step in, Fleener becoming all world, Fairley dominating, and 7-9 can turn into 12-4 without blinking.
Osweiler is a lesson in QB development too. You put the time and effort but if he isn't rolling as a starter before his rookie contract expires it is all for naught.
We really dunno with Brees. A serious injury or falloff in production and he might be gone after this year or next. I think he has the motivation, desire, and health at this point that he will go 3 to 5 more years. Unless some primo situation like Luck to Indy or a value grab like Rodgers to GB I wouldn't go QB yet.

If I'm Loomis I'm calling Denver and asking for two 1st and two 2nd rounders for Brees. Denver would be the favorite the next 2 years with him

Loomis signs Laurinaitis, Kyle Wilson, and a whole lot of irrelevant nobodies while Drew Brees' situation remains up in the air as if he's some scrub not worth prioritizing
How in Hell do you know what the team is doing with Brees?
Maybe Brees is holding tight on unrealistic money.
Maybe Brees wants more years than the team wants to gamble on.
Maybe Loomis just isn't in the mood to negotiate himself.
Who knows? I don't and I'd bet good you don't either.

Honestly i would be ok with that deal.

How many times did they meet with Andrus Peat? Zero, this means absolutely nothing.

Lol. Ya, he played terrible last year. Got worse as the year went on. Lol
Posted on 4/20/16 at 8:51 am to Broken Ear Glen
He was a top 5 QB last season.

His stretch to end last season, while hurt, was one of the best he's ever had
You protect him, and he's as good as it gets
