What does a "lactation consultant" do?

Breastfeeding is popular in media again (who knows why). Just read article about a lactation consultant posting brelfie's on FaceBook - breast feeding her nephew 'cuz her sister was at work.
Lactation Consultant - sounds interesting. Is there a college degree associated with this?
(can't post link to article for obvious reasons)

They come in the room and squeeze your wife's tits for an hour after the baby is born.
It's awesome.

I won't lie, breast feeding is "more complicated" than I thought, but it certainly isn't to the levels these women make it out to be. They will make you feel evil for not breast feeding.

They teach new moms how to breastfeed correctly. It is usually a nurse that transitions to this job.

You go through a certification program targeted at nurses with experience in labor & delivery.

gotcha. The article didn't go into detail about what that job entailed.

I'm in the wrong business.

My basic knowledge is that they provide support and advice before and after labor for mothers who want to breastfeed. They teach classes at our hospital, help after the baby is born, and remain available for you well after you're home to help with the transition.

It's the latest racket in newborn care. They guilt you into something that's marginally better than formula. There's also several opinions out there about the "benefits." My wife's cousin is one, but she's never had a kid, so no real life application.
Pretty much like this.

Interesting. I didn't know breastfeeding support had advanced that much.

They really pissed my wife off, tried to make her feel inadequate because she had some issue that caused her to stop earlier than she wanted to for our last child.
It is easier for some women than for others. And on another note, the militant "breast feeding is natural and women should be able to do it anywhere publicly" get pissed when I tell them adolescent boys everywhere agree and thank you.

So, like a non-hippie doula that actually uses science instead of astrology?

I feel like this is a part of the larger culture of women beating up other women. It's rather ridiculous.
When I see some articles and comments about being a new mom or pregnant it's really frustrating. Like oh you're pregnant and you think you're tired, you don't know tired until you've had a newborn. Oh you think you're tired with a newborn, you don't know tired until you have multiple kids. It's just ridiculous and stupid to look at motherhood like a constant one upping of each other. Get over yourselves. We can all be tired even if we choose not to have children.

I hate to break the news to you guys, but breasts are there for a reason, not just as your playthings.

Breast feeding is measurably better for the health and development of your child. It's really not up for debate. Now you do have to balance the health of the mother against it and some babies just don't latch well so you do what you can.

I have a few head of cattle and there's a huge difference in health, weight, etc the longer you let the calf nurse on the Mom.

frick all lactation consultants. Bunch of self-righteous, can't get an actual job, "here try this essential oil to cure that" bitches.
I don't like them. When my wife gave birth to our first the baby ended up in the NICU (for the next week) after the first night. One came into the room and to my almost distraught wife (don't frick with hormones) says that it's a shame since the baby and mom really imprint on each other in the first 72 hours. I could have choked her right there.
