The indictment, handed down by a Grand Jury today, names five inmates who were assaulted in the Iberia Parish jail chapel in April 2011. The chapel was chosen because it was not under video surveillance.

Ackal and Savoy, along with several deputies, arrived at the jail on that day to assist in a contraband search. Ackal allegedly ordered Byron Lassalle, a former employee who pleaded guilty last month, to "take care" of an inmate who made a lewd comment. Then he and Savoy watched Lassalle ask then-warden Wesley Hayes if there was a place in the jail without cameras. Hayes directed him to the chapel, where the inmate was beaten with batons.

At another point during the shake down, Ackal allegedly encountered another inmate who had written letters complaining about the conditions of the jail, and told deputies to take him to the chapel.

He then ran into a third inmate he knew and didn't like, the indictment alleges, and asked former narcotics agent Jason Comeaux to "take care" of the inmate. Ackal and Savoy allegedly watched as officers beat the inmate with batons and Savoy allegedly ordered a K-9 handler to make his dog bark to intimidate the inmate.

Seems like at least 10 to 12 cops charged and indicted. I heard it could be up to 26 before everything is over. What a shite show!

At least the dog and the cop are cooperating to break the law.

Doesn't sound good. I'd like to think this isn't true, but sounds like there's a bit too much much smoke...

It appears to be coming to an end. Ackal and Savoy are the only ones indicted today. The rest of the group has already pleaded guilty.

The eight former Iberia Parish Sheriff Office employees who previously entered guilty pleas are former IPJ Warden Wesley Hayes, former IPJ Assistant Warden Jesse Hayes, former Lieutenant Bret Broussard of the Narcotics Unit, former narcotics agent Wade Bergeron, former narcotics agent Jason Comeaux, former narcotics agent David Hines, former narcotics agent Byron Benjamin Lassalle and former K-9 handler Robert Burns.

I wish the COMPLETE WORSE for every one of these deputies that are guilty of abusing their privledge to deny civil rights of people. Beating inmates or anyone because you can and have the authority over them takes a sick sick individual.

I seriously hope on the ride home after being found guilty of this, each individual gets in a wreck and is paralyzed and has to eat through a straw the rest of their lives, and their wives get tired of cleaning their dirty diapers so leaves them to start fricking the neighbor in the trailer park with neck tats. All In front of this scum bag officer. Maybe he can catch AIDS in the process.... But that would probably be to easy for this scum.

I for one am going to avoid prison so I don't have to put myself at risk for these types of incidents.

We need to know what happen before they were busted before passing judgment. I would like to know if someone else caused them to do this.

Abuse of power by any public official, at any level, should seriously be a capital offense with much, much harsher penalties and death penalty qualifications at a much lower threshold than used for civilians; also, they should be tried by a military tribunal with an accelerated trial process.

I guess the chapel is the equivalent of The Hole in that place.
