Two biggest wastes of money IMO:

Paying someone to cut your grass

Housekeeper

Think of the money spent of the aforementioned over a 25 year span and how it affects your retirement. You'll be astonished as to how much people waste on these two services.

But it surely takes a lot of stress out of my everyday life leaving me time for my hobbies. I can go for a run after work instead of cleaning the toilets. I can ride my bike on the weekend instead of cutting grass. I'm saving up for retirement well enough. No reason to hate life now.

Depends on what kind of money you make. An attorney who pays a housekeeper $100 a week to clean his house and a yard guy $50 a week to maintain the lawn, and charges clients $300 an hour is making a wise financial decision.

Providing jobs to other people - check
Freeing up your valuable time - check

Clearly this is not "wasted" money.

Time is money, bro...and if that time means more time with the family and less stress at the weekend, then that money spent is worth it..

Maybe, but how many less arguments will you have with your wife if neither of you have to clean the house daily?

FWIW, i mow my own grass because i like it. Not so much the weedeating part, but the mowing is fine with me. The payoff is finishing up, walking barefoot in the backyard and opening up a fresh beer and either sitting in the grass or on the deck, admiring your work on a hot saturday/sunday.

We pay for a maid because we both work, have a toddler, and we'd fight daily over who cleaned what if we did it ourselves. We are willing to pay the money for a housekeeper. She's worth it.

I'd work an extra year to avoid cutting the fricking grass again.

My time is more valuable to me than my money.

Letting someone mow my grass for me allows me to spend extra time with my family.

So it's better to be miserable for 30-40 years so you can be less miserable for 20? Not saying cutting and cleaning makes everyone miserable, but for many it is a chore, nothing more.

Planning for retirement is a good thing. Sacrificing your life when you are young is not.

As with all things, there is a balance point here where you can plan a retirement and not hate your life now. For example, you can save money and time by alternating weekends with a service.
