re: Two weeks in, what's the verdict on Chris Blair?

I can tell that Blair waits for the play to happen before he makes his call. Maybe not completely, but he doesn't jump the gun and speak with emotion right away which was Hawthorne's down fall. Hawthorne would speak as soon as the play was happening so when you get fooled by a ball off the end of the bat you end up with the "and there's a blast to LF...and the CF drifts forward to make the catch. Off the bat it looked like a ball in the left center field gap but coming of the end of the bat, and maybe the wind blowing in would allow the outfielder to get under it. Blair doesn't seem to make similar mistakes because you can hear crowd noise in the back ground cheering for the out/hit not long after he starts describing the play.
I've never had a problem with the occasional goof of a live play, that's why the color guy is there to clean it up. It was Hawthorne's constant crankiness and sometimes his arguing with his color guy about what or why something happened that bugged me. Hawthorne almost never was right in his disagreements with Hannagriff.

Agree, that's one of the things I like. No more
Popped up
Foul
And he doesn't seem to interject stuff the color guy should be doing. Hawthorne tried to talk strategy, get too specific with pitch types/locations, etc and was often completely wrong.

This is Louisiana. Competence is nice and all, but it's not everything.
I wouldn't have it any other way.

This from a guy that lives to bitch, moan, cry and criticize every thing and every body.
Damn I do love the hypocrisy of this board.

Agreed.

if he does this his description of the play should be better than "a ground ball and he is out" ...how about where did he hit the groundball
What is the point of a play by play guy to wait for the play to happen to relay what is happening? I think that is probably one of the most important parts about being a PBP guy...actually calling the play as it happens. Must suck to be listening to the broadcast at the game and hear the call a few seconds later.

Agree. Blair's Pregame interviews are well done.
I like his voice. Sounds like he should be doing Astros PbP.
I like Doug Thompson but his chemistry with Blair is awkward at times. Not sure how this will pan out.
There is a grieving factor in missing Hawthorne. I think Chris will do excellent work for the network.
Would like to see Hannagriff back at the color role.
I think Blair needs to include some humor in his broadcasts esp. With Doug Thompson. Chemistry matters.

Well for starters we're not talking about a few seconds, it's a split second sacrifice in order to be accurate. And if you're sitting at the game you probably aren't listening to the broadcast to hear exactly how the play is unfolding, that's what your eyes are for.

Hawthorne was not a fan since birth. Lol
Well, you can take it up with him then because he often talked about only being able to listen to LSU games on the radio as a kid and hid parents making the trek from Shreveport only a few times a year.

Agreed.
It's not a long pause, but I can definitely hear the crowd react to the out at first base just as Blair describes who is fielding the ball. Hawthorne was a bit quicker on the call, but as I stated earlier that led to a few miscalls.
I will say that I was listening this weekend for only an inning or two, but I heard Blair's call of Romero's no doubt homerun and he pretty much immediately called it a dinger. Must have been a pretty long shot.

but its not and he has made mistakes doing so. In the few innings I have heard he has made plenty of mistakes...missed pitches, been confused on plays, not called out where the ball was hit to, location of pitch etc. So what exactly is it you guys want?
Yall shite on JH for years but then like when a guy he is more deliberate (waits for play to happen) and still makes mistakes say "he is great" "dude is an upgrade' "he is a real professional"...do yall even know how stupid yall sound? Be consistent at least with criticism.

Not even 100 downvotes for that comment?
Weak effort, Tiger Rant.

I like the guy. He is different from JH, but I will soon get used to that. He is settling into a bigger job nicely.
A solid hire for sure.

And in the innings I've heard he hasn't. I'm not sure what your definition of "few" is but I'm making the assumption that I've listened much more than you have so far this season. I'm fairly confident his number of mistakes is less than Hawthorne would have had over the same number of games I've listened to.

I listened to maybe 3 innings and in those few innings he missed a few pitches, called a grounder and the runner was thrown out (where the hell did he hit it?...maybe he is broadcasting for people at the game?), called a hit and run on an 0-2 count with 2 outs (sorry that is just not knowing the game), and was confused in a batters interference play.
I guess every other inning he made no mistakes...that would be amazing

well he does take his time to make the call for accuracy...so he really shouldn't make any

You do realize that he has barely any experience in calling baseball games right? Baseball will be his worst of the three sports at first because he just doesn't have the full knowledge yet which he will get. He is too talented and from what I have heard works too hard to not get better.
I for one could care less if I know who fielded the ground ball I just want to know if he got the guy out. It's not like I am keeping a scorebook while I am listening on the radio.

And he's still far more enjoyable to listen to than Hawthorne at this point.

Do you care what outfielder catches a fly ball? I think its important when calling baseball to relay that type of info.
I also like his voice but it is going to take time getting used to his style.

I do think he should have some description of where the ball was hit, but even if not said right away, as soon as the play was finished the color guy should add who fielded it and describe how it was done.

I agree with you here. I've heard that a few times over the last couple of years. Just because the runner is moving on the pitch does not make the play a hit and run. Perhaps the runner was just trying to steal the bag on his own.

Now this is 100% where the color guy steps in and clears it up for the listeners. I did not hear this exchange with Blair, but I can tell you that if it was Hawthorne he would have argued with Hannagriff about the results or that the rule is dumb.

you are probably right
Look I will never expect a PBP guy to be 100% accurate and I won't hold it against them when they do make mistakes. The hate on here for JH and the Jack hunt call still blows my mind. I really think many of the ones who complain probably weren't even old enough to remember the play. I can tell you I was watching the game without the PBP and when the play happened I was so beside myself I didn't and still don't care how he messed that up...nobody thought that miracle was going to happen.
