Thanks for the reply.
Say I was going to be in the area in May and wanted to work as a deckhand for a week or two, just for the experience. Would they consider that or are they looking for long term help?
Is any fishing experience required?

Depends on the captain really. Most will say yes if you're just doing it for the experience.
Most fishermen get the reputation of being drug addicts and what not, but most are just hard working guys addicted to Caffeine (there are some bad apples though) I'll keep my eye out and ask around for you, if you want.

A lot of the grocery chains, especially the big ones around me are going to Wild caught, and going away from the shite from Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Thailand.They use chemicals n shite.
Dominicks i believe the name is, is making a killing off of a few of the big chains here, locally. It's all we sell them, in the 16-20,21-15,and 31-40 sizes. Other sizes they are using Belize company for.
going Wild Caught, especially for shrimp is making a come back. And it's coming from Gulf or Carribean(belize shrimp company).

I whole-heartedly disagree. The prices are way too low at the docks for any fisherman to survive. Last year at one time during June we were getting $1.75 a lbs for 16-20's. The docks were turning around and selling them to the processors for $3.25 a lbs. We sell as many shrimp as possible off the back of our boat to the people directly for anywhere between $2.50 and $3.50 a lbs for 16-20's. That is the only way we make any profit. We will sell 500lbs a trip to the people then the rest to the dock. Selling at the dock covers our expenses (fuel, groceries, ice, matinence).
If people would just understand what is fed and put into the imported shrimp (pig feces and nasty steroids) they would never eat shrimp at a resteraunt or from the big name grocery stores ever again. When the imports were slowed to hardly zero in 2012-13, shrimp prices were at an all time high. 3.25-3.50lbs for 16-20's at the dock. Now imports are flooding the markets and it's killing the U.S industry. It's shame. The only reason most people still do it today is because either they love it or it's all they've ever known.

And one only has to look at cooked wild caught, compared to the asian stuff. It's like night and day. The Wild, gulf and carribean caught look like the shrimp i had as a kid. Nice bright red stripes when cooked, compared to the shite from asia, where u cant see the stripes, and it just doesnt taste or look as good.

In St.Louis, things r changing. a few of the chains, are going 100% away from the asian crap. All gulf/carribean wild caught.
while 70ish major stores isnt a ton, it catches on. One sees another do it, another begins.
The one chain is going more and more from farmed(asian) to wild caught in more and more fish.
They have 30ish stores and want to be 100% free of asian stuff with in 2 years. All wild caught, or farmed, like they do Faroe island salmon, in the wild, but inn netted areas. NO pools, still in the wild.

A tangent but if I wanted to get some shrimp right off the boat, where would I go, towns, areas? What days/times is availability the most likely? I'm not from here, live in Zachary, and have zero experience with the coast, but would love to drive down some weekend day and pick up some jumbos. I'd like to cut out the middle man and get them as fresh as I can. TIA

I watched a couple shrimp boats near Beaufort SC last summer. I was thinking to myself that would be a neat job back when I was single and younger.. Had a ton of dolphins following them..

Not only the coloring of the shrimp. The biggest difference is the texture and taste. Farm raised shrimp from Asia has the texture of rubber. Wild caught from the Gulf or from the Carolina coast are succulent. I used to own a food truck that was Southern La cuisine. I had a guy that brought my shrimp back from Mobile twice a week. Sometimes they were whites. Sometimes Browns. But always gulf shrimp. I would not compromise and would take shrimp based items off the menu for a day rather than sell that nasty shite from Asia.

They have about 50 different places set up on one lot ...
Go during the week or on a Saturday only about 10 places open there on Sunday ....

I know quite a few guys who shrimp for a living. I call them, place my order and go get them when they tell me they ready.
I've been using one pretty exclusively over the past 4 years because my pick up point is 6 minutes from where I work, but the main reason is that he's a day tripper, when he's working his boat.
There are guys on Facebook who use that as a marketing outlet to sell their catch with good results.
As far as pay, if you run good equipment and hustle you can still make good money.

Living in Zachary, I'd try laffite, houma, or golden meadow. We mainly port in Venice, but we have delivered shrimp as far as Hattiesburg, Ms due to living in Picayune. They have pages on Facebook you can go look on people will post their catch, prices, and when and where they'll be. Bring an ice chest, ice, and money. Leave with the shrimp. It's so easy to cut out the middle man. We (the fishermen) get more money while the customers get fresher shrimp for cheaper.
