there's nothing more annoying than seeing travel teams begging for money either by selling plates of food or raffle tickets to raise money to cover their parents' traveling expenses.
Oh, that's nothing compared to the teams that stand in a busy intersection holding their batting helmets out (because that's much more creative than using a bucket ) and beg for money as if they are homeless.
At least selling something involves actual work. Sell candy, sell food, wash cars, something. I don't give to homeless beggars and I don't give to 9 year old travel team beggars.

My son is not getting an athletic scholarship. He makes straight A's so he may get an academic scholarship (not TOPS ). He goes to a single A private school in BR and they didn't have enough kids to form a Jr High team so I took those 7 kids and added the best 5 from last years American Legion team and we joined this D2 Baseball league in BR. We play 2 games per week during the work week. Travel teams playing in a league. Best of both worlds.

Yes the vast majority of people could pay for most of college for what they pay in to travel baseball.
It has to be something the kid really wants. Rec ball can be pretty awful nowadays, especially at 9-10 where the kids don't get much of anything to hit. Most of the good pitchers have been picked up for travel ball.

The travel in travel in ball isn't as bad as it use to be. My kid plays on an 11U team in the last 2 years we've spent the night in a hotel 4 times.
As far as fundraising we only did football pools and it paid for everything.

Just like everything else, too much of something isn't good.
You can play Travel Ball and enjoy it. Pick a good program that doesn't play every weekend and charge thousands of dollars.
You just have to look around.

Say brah, if you spent all this time and money on education it would be a better investment
I wonder if there has ever been a thread on "what should my kid be doing to better his chances for a academic scholarship?"

Is anyone familiar with the field numbering at Live Oak park? Playing there this weekend and looking for fields 3 and 7.

I hate it but High School ball at the higher level is mostly determined by the time they get to 9th grade.. an unfortunate reality of today's world.
the problem is, the kids playing travel ball are all trying to make a few different high school teams... there's more schools than that, but parents want nothing to do with them...

Amen! The whole "travel ball = best shot at making a high school team" is just a way to help you swallow that bill you pay each year to play baseball. I know, I did it with my boy for 6 years and if I could go back we would have stayed rec and left travel alone. I didn't realize the grip it had on my family and how much we missed out on until I finally pulled the plug on it. We made some amazing friends and had fun, but my kid would be the same player either way. We are back in rec ball and trying to better the league. We put together a coaches clinic with a college coach this year. Hoping people in our area will start getting back into the rec league like we did.
The only thing I hate about travel ball is this. The astounding number of people who raid rec league rosters, saying "the only way you'll make a high school team is by playing travel ball." Now, travel ball is great at giving more baseball to kids who want more baseball, and lots of those kids go on to play high school ball.
BUT...
As many of you know, I coached rec ball for a very long time. And I wasn't as good a coach when I started as I was when I finished. On my final rec league roster, 50% of my kids went on to play high school baseball. 90% of them went on to play some other sport in high school.
We did this having never played in a single travel tournament, or ever once leaving the city limits of Baton Rouge to play ball. In 16 seasons.
Are the odds better with travel ball? Sure. I admit that. But all those people who lured good players off of my roster by saying travel ball was the ONLY way to make a high school team were wrong. All they did was rob my team of good teammates, and (otherwise) good team parents.
I really hope that people find an appreciation for rec ball again, and start to return to rec ball. Travel ball has its time and place, but I believe very strongly that the local rec ball experience should be the norm, and not the exception.

I would have placed more kids on high school teams if they didn't all want to go to the same "powerhouse" baseball factories for high school. Many of my kids who are playing high school ball now were not my best players, but simply players who kept playing, and found their way onto rosters at schools that had opportunities for them.
Why play baseball at a school that only has four roster spots open, and 60 kids trying out? If you want to PLAY baseball, and that's a priority... go where you can get on the field! The 2A, 3A, and 4A schools of the world, for instance.

We play elite ball because my son enjoys it as well as us. We do not expect him to go pro, so not everyone has this mentality. The competition at the Rec level is awful, so if you want the better competition, you need to pay. He does other sports as well, so it is not like it is the only thing he can do. It cost money to go to tournaments and practice facilities. Dont get me wrong, it sucks paying the money, but the product is better.

completely agree, the competition level for recreation falls short in comparison to travel baseball.
I played recreation till I was 11. I had no choice but to leave, the competition level dropped drastically after 3 travel teams were made out of my age groups. In high school you could easily tell who played travel baseball. And half the people who went on to play D1 were playing for the Marrucci and Evo Shield teams before, during, and after high school. The money sucks but they provide competition that rec leagues aren't able to even come close to providing.

Never played there before. My 12 year old is filling in on a travel team for a kid that was injured and out for the next 6 weeks. We play there tomorrow at 4:30pm and 7:00pm.

its getting to where parents will put their kids on a travel team that gets beat 17-4 in both pool play games, first one going home one Sunday, but they can say their kid plays travel ball. Then the kid thinks he's better than the rec ball player, yadda yadda. When I told my son we were hanging up travel ball because of the $$ and time he was upset because he was stepping down a level. That was something drilled into his head by me and the travel ball culture. We thought we were better than rec ball people. So we went out and watched the all-star team for the age group he would be playing in and we were both blown away by how much better the kids were than what we expected. Yeah there were some things that they didn't do perfect but they were competing and all of those boys could/will be decent ball players with proper coaching and some lessons here and there.
My opinion, the elite level player (Upper AAA to Major) should stay in travel ball. The average player (Lower AAA and below) should stay in the rec leagues. youd get better coaching and the system would probably flourish.
