We went without kids once. Stayed at the Wellington. Between Central Park and Times Square, plus a Subway station right outside the entrance. Clean enough for us but that was 10 years ago. Check Tripadvisor.

The Grand Hyatt is next door to Grand Central Terminal (42nd St., I think). It's not cheap, but it's very reasonable for NYC.

The Roosevelt is a couple of blocks from Grand Central. Nice historic hotel and moderately priced to be in Mid Town.

you will never beat the price of the Navy Lodge if you stay in Manhattan! Expect 3 to 4 times that! With 3 kids I would suggest the Doubletree suites in Times Square if you WANT to be in the Times Square area in the middle of everything. Having the suite with a bedroom and a living room w/sofa bed would be great for that many people.

My wife just stayed at The Element and really liked it. They have rooms with fridges and kitchens.
Three blocks from Times Square
I would also suggest staying in Jersey City. Right across the Hudson and rates will be cheaper. Easy commute into the city by PATH or ferry

Staten Island

JC isn't bad but you run the risk of having a large wedding reception at the Hyatt. That being said, take the PATH to exchange place from WTC (one stop) and look at the skyline from the Jersey Side. Can't be beat

We just went in Dec, stayed at the Hilton in Times Square, it is central to everything, but my next trip I wouldn't stay in times square.

Honestly, if you already know your dates for sure and you don't care what brand of hotel you stay at, use hotwire.com. I've saved a shite ton of money and gotten a real nice hotel every time (as long as I put in 3 stars or more). Only caveats are no refunds for any reason other than a government travel restriction (like severe weather or God forbid a natural disaster) and you don't know the exact hotel until after you pay. But you know within a mile of which hotel you will get and how many stars it is, so you sorta see what's there and if it works.

Both you and wife sign up for Hyatt credit card and you will each get 2 free nights. Hilton has a card for 2 free nights as well.

No reason why you should pay for those rooms.

Check when Santa Con is and avoid that weekend if at all possible.

Buy your tickets to Hamilton now, although I am sure it's sold out already.

I checked a few days ago for Hamilton tickets for June 25 (figuring they'd be sold out but tried anyway). On Ticketmaster all were sold out but available as resale tickets for $700 to $1700 a seat. What a scam that they do this.

NY hotel rooms are tiny and expensive comparatively. I can't imagine 5 people in 1 room. Try VRBO or home away for an apartment in midtown or surrounding areas.

Speaking of Hamilton, you might want to look at Army lodging on ft Hamilton....if u stay on states island you will either get hosed with bridge tolls or parking
