, but you can't blame fans for being a little down from what they have seen this season.
Theyve seen a freshman be 3rd in scoring, 1st in rebounds,4th in assists,2nd in steals, and 1st in overall fgs made in the sec. Stop acting like Simmons hasnt produced on a level not seen in the history of the sec

Year before Pete arrived we were 1-17 in conference and 3-23 over all; you have no idea how bad we were before Peter arrived, or the lack of talent we had on that team.

so far, not.
simmons may even turn out to have a better NBA career.
but right now, not even close.
Maravich was in the top few in the NBA in assists and steals some years.
He was a very good pro.

Wow. See, it's this type of crap that provokes the Ben Simmons "bashing".
I admit I'm rough on Simmons. He's a good player, very good at some things. He'll make a lot of money in the NBA, and should have a good career.
But I just don't see the revolutionary, game-changing aspects of him. After all is said and done, he's putting up a good stat line, but will not be much more remembered here than Anthony Randolph, another good one-and-done prospect who played on an unimpressive team. And if you notice, when people pull out their list of great LSU players, Randolph doesn't pop up.
Is Simmons better than Randolph? Yes, he has slightly overall better stats, is a better ball handler, and has better passing skills. I'd say Randolph had a better range and better defensive skills here, a more intimidating blocker. Like Simmons, Randolph was considered a huge "potential" guy, who barely scratched his potential in his one year in college.
Also like Simmons, Randolph was capable of playing all 5 positions on the floor (he did so in high school); although not nearly the guard Simmons could be, he was a better post and power forward matchup at 7 ft.
Here's another striking similarity (and a quote from Randolph's wiki page):
It's interesting to note that despite that huge potential, Randolph only was able to average double figure pts twice in his NBA career (I guess the NBA coaching didn't help him take off like it will Ben), and he's now playing in Russia. This, from a guy who many thought outplayed Blake Griffin in the 2009 Summer League,

quote:That sounds a lot like some of the murmuring about Simmons v Quarterman...
During his senior season, Randolph's team did not qualify for a playoff position, which coach Washington attributed to bad chemistry.[3] Washington called the team very talented and referred to Randolph as the best player on the roster but stated that "as time went by jealousy and agendas set in and took over."

quote:
Randolph's efforts first began to reward him in that year's Summer League being held in Las Vegas, Nevada where he not only began to dominate consistently but was also referred to by various sportswriters as being the best talent in the entire Summer League.[14][15] Among other highlights, including a then-Summer League record tying 42-point explosion in game four against the Chicago Bulls' Summer League team, Randolph was invited to attend the USA Basketball Men's National Team mini-camp following his dominant Summer League performance.[16][17] Though many believed Randolph was a lock to win Summer League MVP, the honor was given to 2009 first overall pick Blake Griffin.

Simmons is averaging 5 assists per game. Pete averaged 5.5 over a 3 year varsity career, with a less talented team around him.

Pistol by far....I went to LSU during his time. A scoring machine. Saw him score 69 against Bama on their court....

Just sit there and think about that for a second.. 69 Points in a college game, and without a three point shot.... There have been a TON of records set and there are some that MAY never be broken, but IMO 44.2 over three years in college hoops is a virtual LOCK as a record that will never be touched............

No way Ben is in the same class as Pete, because when it comes to college basketball players, Pete was in a class of one. In a division of one. Greatest college basketball player ever. No one comes close. You had to see him night after night, like I did, to believe him. The stuff you see in the highlight reels, shooting, leading the break, passes behind the back/through the legs/through the opponent's legs, he DID IT EVERY NIGHT! A virtual magician with a basketball. His warm-up displays were worth the price of admission.
44 ppg. Would've been 60 if they had a three point line. Greatest ballhandler and passer ever, save perhaps Bob Cousy. Revolutionized the game. Was to basketball what the Beatles were to rock and roll/popular music. Changed everything, expanded possibility, added color/spice. Set the pattern and tone of the modern game. Led the way for the Dr. Js Magics, MJs, and Kobes to come, Recruited by the Harlem Globetrotters. NBA HOF to boot.
So to answer the original question, No.

Young people just don't realized what they missed with Pete... The PMAC would be packed every game no matter the teams record if they could watch a guy put up such #'s and put on the show that Pete could.NO MATTER the record of the team... Or the opponent... How many games has the PMAC sold out this season with a player of Simmons abilities???? Twice I think....

Deadly jump shot from as far away as he wanted. Probably the greatest jump shooter in cbb history. A lot of the jumpers he took falling away, knee extended. Prevents blocks and knees jumping opponents in the nuts.
Also, he battled every night. Hated to lose.
